Acquainted With Grief

June 26, 2014

celebrate Jesus

He was despised and rejected—a man of sorrows, acquainted with deepest grief. We turned our backs on him and looked the other way. He was despised, and we did not care.

~Isaiah 53:3, NLT

Sin has made the foundation of thinking unpredictable, uncontrollable and irrational.

~Oswald Chambers

my thoughts red

We have to recognize that indwelling sin is a fact of life. We can call it a fault or a default but it is blatant rebellion against God. It was sin in us that crucified Christ. If sin killed Christ in this world, will it not kill Him in your life; at least in terms of your testimony? If sin rules you then Christ will cease to be a force in you. If Christ rules you, sin will lose its power in you. This is what Paul is taking about in Colossians when he says “So put to death the sinful, earthly things lurking within you.”  The first step to victory is to agree with God that you have sinful things lurking in you. Second: understand sin has destructive consequences. If you fail to recognize sin in you and refuse to deal with it–certain misery awaits you. If I know anything; I know that I know that I know, sin is destructive.

If you want to hate sin the way Jesus hated sin, you must become acquainted with grief. You will never find yourself, the real life that is hidden in Christ, through success because in success you will lose your head which will lead to pride and pride will lead to an eventual fall. On the other hand, grief will bring you to the end of yourself and will produce a spirit of humility. Then and only then, will we begin to see what sin has done to yourself and what it is doing to others.

  • Good group last night at the GATHERING but I forgot to count. We could do better and I believe we will.
  • The Austin Cook service is Friday at 11:00 at Pecks. We are going to get to help with the meal after the service. I need a person to receive it at the church and to deliver it in the church van. I have the address. If you can drive the van or you can use your car and you are available Friday morning, get in touch with me. I want to attend the service but if push comes to serve, I will deliver the food. I’m going to get chicken fingers and ham and you can bring whatever. It needs to be at the church no later than 11:30 on Friday. Landon was right, Austin did attend VBS at DBC several times.
  • We have a lot of people traveling. Naola and Sheila are on their way home while J.D. and gang are on their way to Rita’s at Coco Beach. I think Adam and Jamie come in this weekend but I could be wrong. David and Rebecca will also be traveling this week. Seth should be coming in from Wisconsin some time this weekend and the girls will be going to Douglas. Lot of folks on the road or in the air: pray for traveling mercies.
  • We will have a deacons meeting this Sunday and then we will take off July 6th.
  • Teko Vargas will be with us Sunday night July 13 at 6:00 pm.
  • SUMMER SHUT-DOWN begins Sunday night after worship: all the machines will be cut back or off for a sabbatical.

Keep The Fire Going

December 2, 2012

SCRIPTURE: The fire on the altar shall be kept burning; it shall not go out. [Leviticus 6:12, NRSV]

QUOTE: A man is a failure only when he quits and I will not quit. ~George Washington

COMMENTARY: The bronze altar was outside the holy place but inside the outer curtain. It was the place where all offering except incense were made. There were morning and evening sacrifices everyday plus those brought by the people during the day. Except in times when Israel was in a backsliden condition, the altar was a busy place. The priest were commanded by Moses to keep the altar fire going, even through the dark hours of the night. The fire was a symbol of God’s consuming and holy presence. When the offerings were placed on the altar, the fire consumed the sacrifice and converted it into smoke and ashes. The smoke went up as an offering to God. The ashes stayed here on earth.  One thing is sure, there is no going up [ascending] without sacrifice and there is no sacrifice without fire. Fire was vital for Hebrew worship. Of course you understand the fire that Jesus brought was of a different sort. Jesus said, “I have come to set the world on fire, and I wish it were already burning!” John the Baptist said, I baptize with water those who repent of their sins and turn to God. But someone is coming soon who is greater than I am—so much greater that I’m not worthy even to be his slave and carry his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. The fire could be our passion, zeal, love, ardor: I’m not sure. John associated it with the Holy Spirit but did not indicate that they were one in the same. One thing is certain, we are not to let the fire go out. How do you keep a fire going? How do you keep your love for Jesus hot? I would say: [1] Stay in the word [2] Stay in the fellowship and service of the church. [4] Stay on your knees. [5]  Stay focused by sharing your faith. When we refer to a person being on fire for Jesus, it is usually related to personal evangelism.

EXTRA: I did not watch the game live and I’m glad. I caught the last 2 minutes at Hannah’s. Watched the replay this morning around 2:00 am. I don’t know folks–Notre Dame may be more than we can handle. We are making a lot of critical mistakes and don’t seem to be improving. Oh well, it is just a game. Georgia did beat Florida. They do have a very good team and Big Mama is a much better sport than I am. I know you did not know that so I thought I would tell you. LORD willing, Seth will get to see the National Championship game. He is to graduate January 4, 2013. and that is just 33 days from today. GUESS WHAT: Gregg was at the game! Someone gave him a ticket. Can you believe that? I think old Gregg did pretty good. [Inside joke]

The Spirit Of The Antichrist

November 10, 2012

SCRIPTURE: But if someone claims to be a prophet and does not acknowledge the truth about Jesus, that person is not from God. Such a person has the spirit of the Antichrist, which you heard is coming into the world and indeed is already here. [I John 4:3, NLT]

QUOTE:  With the help of the federal court system,  several groups have been successful in throwing God out of the public square, out of the schools. The abortionists have got to bear some burden for this because God will not be mocked. And when we destroy 40 million little innocent babies, we make God mad. I really believe that the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People For the American Way – all of them who have tried to secularize America – I point the finger in their face and say, “You helped this happen.” ~Jerry Falwell

COMMENTARY: What is the spirit of the Antichrist. According to John: [1] The spirit of the Antichrist does not acknowledge the truth about Jesus. [2] It is the spirit of deception and [3] It is the spirit of the world. The world system is prophecied in Psalm 2, “Why are the nations so angry? Why do they waste their time with futile plans? The kings of the earth prepare for battle; the rulers plot together against the LORD and against his anointed one. “Let us break their chains,” they cry, “and free ourselves from slavery to God.” To a true believer, the spirit of the Antichrist is as evident as the fingers on your hand but the world doesn’t get it: John said that they would not be able to detect error from truth. In Deuteronomy 32 Moses referred to the Israelites as a foolish and senseless people [v.6]. In verse 28 of the same chapter Moses says of his own people, “They are a nation void of sense, there is no understanding in them. If they were wise, they would have understood this; they would discern what the end would be.” No one has been more blessed by God than America: I wonder what Moses would say about us.

EXTRA: Another beautiful day and it was my first Friday in a long time without a Funeral or a Surgery. It was great to have a day off with no obligations to fulfill. I am looking forward to Sunday. I believe we are going to have two great services. Pray, pray, pray!

DAY 34 WITH 55 TO GO…Big Test Monday, Pray! Please!

October 18, 2012

SCRIPTURE: I will search with lanterns in Jerusalem’s darkest corners to punish those who sit complacent in their sins. They think the Lord will do nothing to them, either good or bad. [Zephaniah 1:12, NLT]

QUOTE: “You all know,” said the Guide, “that security is mortals’ greatest enemy.”  ~C.S. Lewis,    Pilgrim’s Regress

COMMENTARY: Complacency is defined as…self-satisfaction especially when accompanied by unawareness of actual dangers or deficiencies. When I think of complacency, I think of the story of the frog that was put in a kettle of luke warm water. The frog was perfectly content and a fire was built under the kettle. The water warmed so gradually that the frog never hooped out; it was cooked without ever sensing danger. Are you satisfied to sit complacent in your sin? Are you happy with the way things are? Are you pleased with your own performance? Do you have a thirst for more of Christ? Do you yearn for more? If you have no desire to change, to improve, or to let go of harmful sins: you are complacent.

Did you notice: The Jews accused God of being complacent…He will do nothing either good or bad.

EXTRA: Another busy day. Mr. Jack Maddox celebration of life service today at 1:00 [Peck]. Ken’s grandmother at the same time. I love Jack and Eloise Maddox. They are the sweetest folks I know. I have never been in their home that they didn’t make me feel very special. They have two sweet and wonderful daughters: Annette and Jan. I am telling you they are salt of the earth folks. Mr. Jack was vivacious, full of life, optimistic, cheerful, out spoken if need be and encouraging to be around. He inspired us to have our last community tent revival which was some years ago but it was Jack who was behind it. You be praying for Mrs. Eloise.
