But those who die in the LORD will live; their bodies will rise again! Those who sleep in the earth will rise up and sing for joyFor your life-giving light will fall like dew on your people in the place of the dead!

~Isaiah 26:19, NLT

Blessed are those who can live with unanswered questions, who can rest in what they see and who can wait patiently for God to reveal what they can’t see.

~Charles Rozell Swindoll

When it comes to questions, I have them and it took time and grace for me to learn to live with unanswered questions. There is a lot we will not know in this life. Our understanding of reality is very dim but God has given us this blessed thing called “Hope.” How miserable we would be if we had no hope. Job had questions, lots of questions. One is found in Job 14:14…Can the dead live again? If so, this would give me hope through all my years of struggle, and I would eagerly await the release of death.

God created both the natural and spiritual world with the natural reflecting the spiritual. When it comes to the resurrection, our Creator has given us signs in all direction. A nights of restful sleep and then the awakening is a picture of the resurrection. Spring time is a picture of the resurrection–everything appeared dead but has sprang back to life. Plants are a sign of the resurrection. The same olive trees that Jesus prayed beneath are still in existence. Didn’t Titus the Roman have them cut to the ground? Yes, but that doesn’t kill and olive tree, they shoot branches from the stump. Seeds are another sign. I have all kinds of garden seed in the freezer. There is no apparent life in them but soon I will be planting them and they will come up.

Feed your faith, starve your doubt, cling to hope and trust God with all your unanswered question.

Life’s Mission

December 2, 2015

When they finish proclaiming their message, the beast that comes up out of the abyss will fight against them. He will defeat them and kill them, and their bodies will lie in the street of the great city, where their Lord was crucified.

~Revelation 11:7, GNT

If we are fearful about dying physically, there is little chance we will have the courage to die spiritually [to sin and self].

The two witnesses mentioned in Revelation 11 are prophets in the mold of Moses and Elijah. In John’s vision God sent two witnesses dressed in sackcloth to proclaim God’s message for 1,260 days. These witnesses or prophets are under divine protection; no one has the ability to harm them until their mission is complete.

Once their mission is complete, Satan makes war on them and kills them. The world celebrates their death. To show their lack of respect, they leave the bodies of the two prophets in the street to rot. The world mocks their death and disgrace. But after 3 1/2 days, the Ruach of God breathes new life into their bodies and they rise. Then they here a voice from heaven calling, “Come up here!” Suddenly they ascend heavenward and disappear in a cloud. After they are gone, all hell breaks lose.

Three quick lessons:

  1. You are not going to die until your mission is complete. You are under divine protection.
  2. When you die, you are not going to stay dead. You will hear the voice and you will rise. Physical death is an illusion: it appears final but it is not. Death is not the final sleep; it is the final awakening. {Sir Walter Raleigh}
  3. Seek neither more nor less than God’s will for your life. {Chip Ingram}

  • Our Grace Ministry Guatemala offering stands at $20,791.31. This means we need three consecutive offering of $2,500 or more. This means we need a miracle. For those who are giving, it is time to pray. One way or the other, we need divine intervention. I am not going to worry and I am not going to brow-beat. I am going to pray.
  • I noticed some new names on our pray list this week; people who are battling cancer. Also remember those in the hospital: Buford Burgess and Roylean Lewis.
  • Kane did not have to get blood Monday but he may go in Thursday {Huntsville}.
  • The Deacons elected Adam Glenn to be their chairman several weeks back and yesterday via teleconference, Jerry Wayne Segars was elected as chairman of the Budget Committee. Their first meeting is Wednesday night January 6. They will meet at 6:45, right after the GATHERING.
  • I will be on light duty for awhile. I go see Dr. Ward today so I may know more tomorrow. I can still sit, thank goodness but my walking is restricted. I only move when necessary. LORD willing I will be at the Gathering but definitely no standing. We are going to have to find my stool. Sunday night I could stand better than sit. The back is a strange thing.

The Mystery Of Prayer

September 13, 2015

“Lord, if only you had been here, my brother would not have died. But even now I know that God will give you whatever you ask.”

~John 11:21-22, NLT

God answers all true prayer, either in kind or in kindness.

~Adoniram Judson

my thoughts red

I love John 11: in verse 3 we have the sisters prayer request–So the two sisters sent a message to Jesus telling him, “Lord, your dear friend is very sick.” Then in verse 4 we have Jesus response “Lazarus’s sickness will not end in death. No, it happened for the glory of God so that the Son of God will receive glory from this.” Jesus delayed his coming for two days and when He gets to Bethany, Lazarus is physically dead and in a tomb. Then we have the sister’s response to Jesus not coming immediately or in time to heal Lazarus.

  1. They blame…“Lord, if only YOU had been here, my brother would not have died.” {Both said the same thing}
  2. They are disappointed.
  3. They are bewildered: they do not understand why Jesus was not there when they needed Him most.
  4. They are filled with grief.
  5. Mary may have been depressed: she did not leave the house to met Jesus.

Lesson from the story:

  1. Jesus answered their prayer but just not as they had imagined. God’s plans are much better than our expectations. Actually, His plans are better than our dreams.
  2. The sisters wanted a ‘healing’ but Jesus gave them a ‘resurrection.’ A resurrection trumps a healing.
  3. We all experience the same negative emotions when Christ does not respond to our prayer in the way that we had imagined–disappointment, grief, doubt, fear and despair.
  4. It all boils down to FAITH in CHRIST. Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if only you had been here, my brother would not have died but even now I know that God will give you whatever you ask.” Jesus told her, Your brother will rise again.” “Yes,” Martha said, “he will rise when everyone else rises, at the last day.” Jesus told her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Anyone who believes in me will live, even after dying. Everyone who lives in me and believes in me will never ever die. Do you believe this, Martha?” “Yes, Lord, I have always believed you are the Messiah, the Son of God, the One who has come into the world from God.”
  5. Mary’s devotion was off the charts but it was Martha {the OCD pot banger} who had the greatest faith. Never underestimate the Martha’s.

  • Gary is making slow progress: he is extremely weak.
  • Kane Hogan: {from Michelle at 8:30 pm last night…9/12/15} The steroid is really playing with Kane’s blood suger. We are going on a week in the hospital. The insulin keeps getting increased but the blood suger still climbs in the evening. We will be in the hospital until they get the right combination. They tell us it is all medical. They have done this. Now we wait for the chemo to hit his system they say it is ruff stuff. He feels fine and we are thankful for that. He takes 3 to 6 shots of insulin a day right now.
  • Today’s schedule: Coffee, Biscuits and donuts at 9:00, LCBS at 9:15, Worship at 10:15 and 6:15. AWANA and VISITATION at 5:30.
  • LORD willing, we will be in REVIVAL at Belleview today through Wednesday night.
  • What about this weather. I went for a walk around 6:00 last night and came in at dark and my hands were cold.
  • I got home at 1:30 am Friday night and that is why there was no EXTRA.
  • I think you are going to love the PARKING LOT. One caution: do not park on the areas where you see the wheat straw; we have back filled those areas and reseeded them. Your not going to need a shade tree to park under today.

But now you must be holy in everything you do, just as God who chose you is holy. For the Scriptures say, “You must be holy because I am holy.”
~I Peter 1:15-16

Holiness is not the way to Christ–Christ is the way to holiness.

For the second week in a row, I sat down to study my LCBS lesson and I did not comprehend a thing so I took a nap. What is your reaction to this implicit command to be holy. It is found throughout scripture. There is not a single reference to it in the O.T., there are multiple references. Over and over again. Leviticus 20:7 reads, “So set yourselves apart to be holy, for I am the LORD your God.” This command is found 6 times in Leviticus alone. How many holy people do you know? Most Baptist can’t think of a single person when asked this question whereas our holiness friends will recite a list. A lot depends on our definition of holy. The word holy {I Peter 1:15-16} is hagios and it is used in two ways in scripture: [1] It speaks of God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit who are absolutely holy in purity, majesty and glory. [2] It is also used of men and things in so far as they are devoted to God. These are called hagioi “Saints”…”Sanctified” or “Holy ones.” The Temple was also called holy, as were certain places in the temple. The church is referred to as a Holy Nation, Holy Priesthood and our bodies are referred to as Holy Temples.
In today’s lesson we see some characteristics of a holy person:
  1. They are obedient to Christ [v.14]
  2. They do not conform {not afraid to be different} [v. 14]
  3. They are not man-pleasers but God-fearers [v.17]
  4. They work from the point of redemption {Christ work on the cross}. They understand that it is what He did that makes us holy. [v. 18-19]
  5. They are empowered by Christ resurrection. [v.21]
  6. They love sincerely. [v.22]
  7. They incarnate the word of God. [v.23]

We cannot be something we are not. Holiness is a divine miracle. I could never put my self in a position to be holy, Christ did this for me. Everything is grace from A-Z, the Redemption of Christ made me holy, the resurrection of Christ enables me to live holy. God puts it in me but my obedience to Christ is what works it out. The reason I and most others don’t live a holy life is that we focus on our weakness and failure and not God’s power.

  1. God’s power spoke creation into existence. You and I were  not there, we had nothing to do with it.
  2. God’s power liberated Israel from the powerful grasp of Pharaoh: who in the world at that time thought such a thing was possible. God did it with ease!
  3. God’s power can liberate you and I from bad habits and selfish ways: Study the life of Paul for an example.
  4. God’s power is greater than any possession or addiction: Mary Magdalene would be a prime example.
  5. God’s power can make things new even in a sinful world. The church would be an example.

God is a genius, you cannot be holy unless you are willing but you will not be holy a part from His grace. Oswald Chambers say, “We can’t be holy but we can give Christ permission to make us Holy.” He has it fixed it so no one can brag. Holiness can only be achieved one way, HIS!

A lot of you remember Glenn Coffee who played running back at Alabama. He played a couple of years in the pro’s and had one really good year before abruptly retiring. He recently graduated jump school in Fort Benning. Here is his testimony about leaving the NFL…

As far as the NFL goes, I have a hard time putting it like this because it sounds kind of harsh, but I feel like it ruins a lot of lives more than anything else. And that goes for people who have short careers in the NFL and long careers in the NFL. Because what happens is they see that as success. And money throughout your life has nothing to with your salvation inChrist. A lot of players get that money. And they chase that money, man, and I feel that they’re really missing the true meaning of life. So I’m constantly afraid for the NFL and the players because kids growing up nowadays, they see that as the end all, be all. And that’s just not the case.

Coffee did not like California. He missed Alabama and regretted leaving. He said, “I quit the NFL because my heart was not in it. I believed the Lord was leading me to do something else.”

“Why are you looking among the dead for someone who is alive? He isn’t here! He is risen from the dead!”

~Luke 24:5-6, NLT

Christ’s empty tomb guarantees our victory over death.

~David McCasland

my thoughts red

The women from Galilee who followed Jesus watched the men clean and wrap Jesus for burial and made plans to come back first thing on Sunday morning and do it right. They were utterly shocked to discover an empty tomb. They all began crying supposing someone had stolen the body: this intensified their grief. Two men suddenly appeared to them in dazzling white and their grief becomes mixed with fear. They fall with faces to the ground and then the men speak, “Why are you looking among the dead for someone who is alive? He isn’t here! He is risen from the dead!” Some times our sorrows and shattered dreams seem so final but they are not.

A dad was walking with his little girl through the mall just before Easter and everyone had their Easter displays out, with baskets, eggs, candy and bunnies. She shook her head in disgust and said, “I’ll bet there is not one empty tomb for sale in this entire mall.” The dad laughed but got a kick out of the six-year olds amazing insight. I bet she had a children’s pastor like our Mrs. Shohn. In other words, someone had told her what Easter was all about.

Prayer For REVIVAL in America

When you put on a luncheon or a banquet, don’t invite your friends, brothers, relatives or rich neighbors. For they will invite you back and that will be your only reward. Instead invite the poor, the cripple, the lame and the blind. Then at the resurrection of the righteous, God will reward you.

Abraham inherited a land that he knew he would never hold title to in this life but he was content to wait. I know that certain things we do are right: things like the BLOCK PARTY and Luke 14. We may or may not get any immediate return from these acts of kindness but there is a payday someday. In the last 12 years, via the BLOCK PARTY, DBC has given away, unconditionally with no strings attached, around $150,000–$200,000. I have made the mistake of looking for an immediate return…it’s not going to happen. I like Dallas Willard translation of Luke 12:14…“You get paid back after the just are raised from the dead.” That would mean, not in this life time.

SCRIPTUREHe is not the God of the dead, but of the living; you are greatly mistaken. {Mark 12:27, NASB}

QUOTE: Joy is the serious business of heaven. ~C.S. Lewis

COMMENTARY: Jesus is addressing the Sadducees. They did not believe in a resurrection or any kind or life after physical death, that is why they were Sad you see. They were not only ‘greatly’ mistaken, they were ‘sadly’ mistaken. They were hard, cold, stern, unbelieving, cynical and corrupt. Their greatest concern was political power. Jesus was very direct with them: He said, “You are greatly mistaken.”

  1. You do not know the Word of God [Scriptures]
  2. You do not know the Power of God
  3. You do not know the Son of God [they did not recognize the deity of Christ]

EXTRA: Well today is the day that all the teachers look forward to. Some of the kids want to go another week and I could handle it but I don’t do that much. The real heroes of 2013 are the nursery workers. Everyone has done great.

ANTIDOTE: I don’t really care if you read this our not but it did happen. It doesn’t sound like it could be true but we have the evidence. From time to time, I get anonymous letters and I learned a long time ago not to take them seriously. Matter of fact, I look for a signature before I read any letter and if there is no signature, I throw it the trash or give it to one of the secretaries to read. If there is anything in there that is important, they will inform me. I got one yesterday and it was a doozy. I seen there was no signature and I gave it to Tracey. She started laughing and then started reading out loud. I said, “I don’t want to hear it” and she said, “Yes, you do” and she proceeded to read. First of the person who wrote the letter is crazy. I’m talking run over dog crazy. Although he/she had nothing really good to say about me is a couple of asides, the letter was not about me. TLC was right, it was funny. It did not discourage me in the least. I do feel very sorry for the person who wrote the letter; they are not playing with a full deck. I would put it on the bulletin board for everyone’s entertainment but that would not be Christ like. No sane person could write this letter. The person did assume that I would be hand picking the next Music Director which is not the case. We are going by the book. I think the personnel committee will recommend a committee to the church and this committee with begin the search. The most critical thing we can do now is pray. Whoever they recommend has to get a 3/4 majority vote from the entire church. That in itself will take a miracle.

Physical Death

May 3, 2013

A Billy Graham MY Hope cropped

SCRIPTURE: Jesus wept. {John 11:35, NASB}

QUOTE: The death rate in this world is 100%. ~James Mason Booth

Paul Azinger

Paul Azinger

COMMENTARY: Professional golfer Paul Azinger now 54 years old was diagnosed with cancer at age 33. He had just won a PGA Championship and at the time had 10 PGA tournament wins under his belt. Sometime later, he expressed what he felt when the doctor told him he had cancer…”A geniune feeling of fear came over me: I would die from cancer. Then another reality hit me even harder; I was going to die eventually anyway, whether from cancer or something else. It is just a question of when. Suddenly everything I had accomplished in golf seemed absolutely meaningless. All I wanted was to live.” Then Paul remembered something that his bible study leader Larry Moody had said repeatedly, “Zinger, we are not in the land of the living going to the land of the dying. We are in the land of the dying going to the land of the living.” In other words we are not dying in the land of the living, we are living in the land of the dying. Physical death is very real to us but actually it is a portal through which we move from the world of the dying to the world of the living.

At the tomb of Lazarus, Jesus wept. It is heart warming to know that God entered into our sorrow and weeps with us but He would not be a God we would want to worship if weeping with us was all He could do. Jesus did weep with Mary and Martha but then he said, “Lazarus, come forth.” Hallelujah, what a Savior!

  • We updated the blog yesterday evening but in case you missed it, the gift to the Martin family was $600
  • We have a special offering this Sunday. We are doing something we don’t normally do–using the mission offering for the roof. We have $11,000 in our Doc & Clara Martin Fund and we are going to need at least $10,000 more for the rubber roof and $20,000 for the metal. Deuteronomy 16:16-17 reads… “Everyone who comes to meet with the Lord must bring a gift. Each man should give as much as he can. He should decide how much to give by thinking about how much the Lord has given him.”
  • I attended the Malcomb Meals service yesterday. Malcomb invested a lot in our relocation back in 1991. Ironically, that was the year he retired from 3-M. I did not know until yesterday that he and Bettye are from Athens. He graduated from Athens High School in 1954 and moved to Danville in 1962. I graduated Athens High is 1967 and moved to Danville in 1979. We had more in common than I realized. Bro. Booth brought a good message at the Celebration of Life Service. Most of the thoughts in the blog came from his message. Of course, I always put my spin on things.
