The earth itself will stagger like a drunk, sway like a hut in a storm. The world is weighed down by its sins; it will collapse and never rise again.

~Isaiah 24:20, GNT

Beware of thinking to lightly of sin.

~C. H. Spurgeon

The earth, even the ground beneath our feet and the sky above our heads, is under the curse of sin. Earthquakes, famines, droughts, storms, disease, decay and death are evidence of the consequences of man’s rebellion. Sin creates a staggering burden that becomes to heavy to carry.

The outside temperature of a Jet Airliner flying at 36,000 feet is minus 70 degrees Fahrenheit. This means that moisture can become a fatal problem due to ice build up on the wings. To fly at these high altitudes, Jets require deicers on the wings that work similar to defrosters in vehicles. In February of 2009, Continental Express flight 3407 crashed into a home outside of Buffalo, due to ice buildup on the plane’s wings and tail section. This disaster is not instantaneous; it is a process that takes time but eventually the ice which form in layers and become a burden to heavy for the aircraft to bear.

Sin will destroy this world and the system that governs it. There is only one way to survive the coming judgment, repentance. Sin has formed layer upon layer of rebellion which will result in a fatal crash. Only the blood of Christ will and can remove the sin. The only way to keep sin from getting the victory is to repent and turn to Christ. There is no hope for our bodies, the world or even the earth: sin will eventually destroy them all but you can be saved by trusting Christ.

They say, “Let’s cut the ropes and set ourselves free!”

~Psalms 2:3, CEV

There is no rebellion against the weak.

Rebellion is rooted in our fallen nature. You can see it in the heart of a child but unfortunately, we do not outgrow this spirit of pride that drives us to do things our way. Psalm 2 has been a favorite of mine for years, “Nations, kings and rulers rebel against God and against His anointed [Jesus]. Their attitude is expressed in verse 3, “Let us free ourselves from His rule.”{GNT} “Let’s cut the ropes and set ourselves free!” {CEV}

This expresses the desire of kings, rulers and powerful people. These elites, who hold offices in high places, are not rebelling against us [the impotent and powerless working class], they are rebelling against an authority higher than their own. They are defying God. They are cutting all restraints. They are cutting the ropes that bind them to the mother ship. They want freedom to sail the high seas in their puny craft without any direction or restraint from God.

Obama and the Progressives {Liberals, Democrats} hate the constitution. Why? Because it is a higher authority based on scripture, moral conduct and the product of great minds. Obama, doesn’t want to be connected to Jefferson or Washington. He wants to cut the ropes but it is not simply Jefferson that he loathes. His real rebellion is against God.

What the Progressives are doing to this once great Republic is disturbing to God-fearing, tax-paying, freedom-loving Americans but the Progressive don’t disturb God, they entertain Him. [But the One who rules in heaven laughs. The LORD scoffs at them. Psalm 2:4] God sits on His throne in heaven and laughed at their idiotic foolishness. A fool is one who thinks he is being admired when actually he is the object of scorn and laughter.

How are you going to make it without God when you are breathing His air and walking on His land? Cutting the ropes is not an intelligent move. Actually, I can’t think of one intelligent liberal, can you?

  • The LORD is good. Amidst life’s disappointments, He makes some amazing things happen and they provide enough encouragement to keep us going. Thank God for friends, old and new, amen!
  • Can you believe it? AWANA has finished another season. All that is left is AWARDS NIGHT [May 15]. As Keith says, “Unbelievable.”
  • We have a couple of things coming up in May that are unusual: May 22 we are having COMMUNION in the am worship hour and on May 29, we have are first DEBT RETIREMENT OFFERING. One offering on May 29th and our goal is $15,000.
  • GOLDEN GIRLS this Saturday: CB in Hartselle at 9:00 a.m. We are going for a record. I think 9 is the most we have had and we have some 14 possibilities.

The Downfall Of A Nation

April 23, 2016

Your country has been devastated, and your cities have been burned to the ground. While you look on, foreigners take over your land and bring everything to ruin.

~Isaiah 1:7, GNT

Righteousness makes a nation great; sin is a disgrace to any nation.

I began a new daily bible study in Isaiah last week and it took me two days to get by chapter one. Judah was living in rebellion against God and Isaiah was prophesying doom. I have narrowed Judah’s downfall to five things; the startling thing is that it sounds like we are talking about the United States.

  1. Rebellion against God. {v.2} “The children I brought up have rebelled”…{v.4}“You are doomed”…”You have rejected the LORD, you have turned your backs on Him.” This rebellion lead to moral depravity and sin sickness making the nation unhealthy and unholy. {v.5} “Your head is wounded, your heart and mind are sick…not one healthy spot on your body.”
  2. Ruin from foreign invasion. {v.7} “Foreigners taking over your land [gas stations, motels, banks, etc] and bringing everything to ruin.” {This is literally happening before our very eyes}
  3. Rulers who defy God and pay no attention to His word. {v.10} Jerusalem, your rulers and your people are like those of Sodom and Gomorrah. Listen to what the Lord is saying to you. Pay attention to what our God is teaching you.
  4. Ritualistic Religion that is vain and powerless. {v.13-17} It’s useless to bring your offerings. I am disgusted with the smell of the incense you burn. I cannot stand your New Moon Festivals, your Sabbaths, and your religious gatherings; they are all corrupted by your sins. I hate your New Moon Festivals and holy days; they are a burden that I am tired of bearing.
  5. Refusal to help the helpless. {v.15-17} “When you lift your hands in prayer, I will not look at you. No matter how much you pray, I will not listen, for your hands are covered with blood. Wash yourselves clean. Stop all this evil that I see you doing. Yes, stop doing evil and learn to do right. See that justice is done—help those who are oppressed, give orphans their rights, and defend widows.” Help the helpless and who is the most helpless in our society? The unborn and we are killing them by the millions and our courts made it legal but it is not right and God will have the last word on the matter of abortion.

  • I haven’t had much extra: today is a normal schedule. If you like normal, you better enjoy it because there is nothing normal about May.
  • Since we don’t do a Sunday night/Monday blog, I will go ahead and ask for your prayers. Monday is a pivotal day for us. We are not the only family in DBC going through a difficult time. It’s not right for me to hog all the prayer but your prayers are appreciated more than you know. It’s not the length of your prayers that counts, it’s the sincerely. Peter prayed a three word prayer, “Lord save me.” Very brief but very sincere.
  • Our final lap is going by in a hurry. June’s last AWANA store night is this evening. Our last Mother’s Day is two weeks away. Some big decisions will probably be made the next few weeks. We need to begin praying for the transition: [1] Pray that the Lord’s church at Danville will become one in Christ. [2] Pray for a moving or stirring of the Spirit of God. “HIS kingdom come, HIS will be done in Danville just like it is in heaven.”

March 25, 2016

But when people keep on sinning, it shows that they belong to the devil, who has been sinning since the beginning. But the Son of God came to destroy the works of the devil.

~I John 3:8, NLT

There is pleasure in sin but only for a season. If there was no pleasure involved, no one would be tempted.

~Tim Kamikaze Keenum

Sin is similar to fire in that he attracts but then destroys. Moths will fly into the flame of a candle. Mosquitoes and many other insects are attracted to light, they cannot resist the temptation although it means certain death. Sin is like fire in the way it destroys, first it attracts and then it burns.

Ultimately all who refuse to repent will suffer the consequences of eternal fire. Have you heard of Baba Gurgur. It is a natural gas fire near the city of  Kirkuk in Northern Iraq. Scientist estimate that it has been burning for 2,500 years and no one can put it out. The flames are perpetuated by natural gas percolating through the rocks. Similar fires are found in India, Australia, Germany, Indonesia, Turkey, and Turkmenistan. No one started these fires and no one can put them out.

Would a loving God send humans into an eternal flame? Technically God does not send us to hell, we are attracted to sin and refuse to repent. The essence of sin is “I must have my way: I insist upon it.” This attitude puts us in a constant state of rebellion. As C.S. Lewis says, “In the end God says, ‘not my will but thy will be done.'” Hell is the consequence of demanding our way.

  • Today is a happy/sad day for me. Gary and I shared some dreams together and I was convinced that the LORD was going to heal him. We had some big plans that will not materialize in this world. Six weeks or so ago, I realized that Gary was not getting better and I have grieved since. Gary loved to help people. He was a people person. He not only helped others, he did it cheerfully. Every time I look at the ramp in the FORTE, I will think of Gary. I do rejoice that Gary’s suffering is over. He suffered much more than people realize and in that light, I am thankful for his promotion. Pray for his COLS which is today at 3:00 at DBC. God blessed me and DBC when he lead Gary to join our fellowship.

But see here, you who live in your own light and warm yourselves from your own fires and not from God’s; you will live among sorrows.

~Isaiah 50:11, TLB

The ultimate slavery is total independence from God.

my thoughts red

In our nation, independence–the freedom to speak, write, assemble and worship without fear of persecution– is a prized possession and make no mistake about it, I am a patriot and a lover of freedom but understand that true freedom can only be found in Christ. Those who seek to live independently of Christ are of all men, the greatest slaves. What is a guitar string detached from the guitar? Can it fulfill it’s purpose independently of the guitar? No, a guitar string is totally dependent on the guitar.

Can you fulfill your intended purpose a part from Christ and His body? Isaiah said, those who refuse to trust the LORD walk in darkness. They try to compensate by building their own fires and creating their own light but there is no peace for the wicked [those who rebel against God]. The ultimate reward for those who refuse to trust in Christ is misery, sorrow and torment. There is no freedom in hell.

What’s In Your Future

March 6, 2015

Celebrate Jesus.crimsonjpg

Look at those who are honest and good, for a wonderful future awaits those who love peace.  But the rebellious will be destroyed; they have no future.

~Psalm 37:37-38, NLT

God is more interested in your future and your relationships than you are.

~William Franklin Graham

my thoughts red

Humans have a fascination with the future. They say at least one out of five Americans read the horoscope daily and one of three check it occasionally. False prophets have made millions of dollars with their books on prophecy. Actually, we do not need the horoscope, false prophet or physics: the bible will reveal our future.

God speaks in Isaiah 46:9-10Remember the things I have done in the past. For I alone am God! I am God, and there is none like me. Only I can tell you the future before it even happens. Everything I plan will come to pass, for I do whatever I wish. Although none of us can predict the future, God has given us the gift to determine some aspects of our future. Moses told Israel: you have two choices–You can obey the LORD and enter the land where you will live or you can disobey, stay here in the wilderness and die. Your choice is life or death, a blessing or a curse.

Rebellion is a curse. Samuel said, “Rebellion is as sinful as witchcraft.” Those who rebel against God have no future, period. Proverbs 24:20, For evil people have no future; the light of the wicked will be snuffed out. And you can throw in Proverbs 13:15 for boot, “The way of transgressors is hard.”

Do you bristle with resentment and anger every time someone gives you instructions? Do you feel above taking instructions from anyone but especially spiritual leaders? Just remember, you attitude determines your future.

  • Today we pray for FAMILY. Folks we have a lot of hurting families. I was on the phone last night with a broken hearted mom. I am telling you folks, the pain and devastation that sin produces is everywhere. Pick out a family and pray for them. I am leaning very strongly toward connect groups so that we can pray for each other.
  • Have not heard from B’ham since yesterday morning. We will probably go down today. Seth came in from Atlanta last night and said all was clear until he got to Hartselle.
  • Our front yard is a sheet of ice about an inch thick and nothing melted yesterday.
  • Remember, no DEACON’S meeting Sunday. We begin at 9:15 with LCBS. Gregg and I will have coffee and donuts at 9:00. Remember, you have to run your clocks up one hour Saturday night. It is time to Spring Up!

“A Birth Like No Other”

Jesus is fully human and fully God.

26 In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a village in Galilee, 27 to a virgin named Mary. She was engaged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of King David. 28 Gabriel appeared to her and said, “Greetings, favored woman! The Lord is with you!” 29 Confused and disturbed, Mary tried to think what the angel could mean. 30 “Don’t be afraid, Mary,” the angel told her, “for you have found favor with God! 31 You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you will name him Jesus. 32 He will be very great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his ancestor David. 33 And he will reign over Israel forever; his Kingdom will never end!”

34 Mary asked the angel, “But how can this happen? I am a virgin.” 35 The angel replied, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the baby to be born will be holy, and he will be called the Son of God.

Unique Birth

Jesus could have been born in a palace. Actually, there was a palace with indoor restroom facilities and hot and cold water just a few miles [6] from where Jesus was born. Herod’s palace was one of the most modern buildings of the time but Jesus was born near by in a stable. The KING of kings born in a stable with no nurse maid, no servants to attend to his needs. His birth was celebrated by angels and shepherds. The shepherds were the lowest of the lowly. Most people despised them and no one wanted to be life them.

Just think, Mary had the heartbeat of God within her for 9 months. As the song says, “When she kissed the face of Jesus, she kissed the face of God.” Jesus was a real baby, He cried when hungry, He pooped in his diapers, He had blood in his veins just like you and I.

The Paradox

Reason would have Jesus either be fully God or fully man or perhaps half-God and half-man but Jesus was fully God and fully man. It is a statement of truth that does not make sense and it seems to be a contradiction. Many truths in the scripture are of a paradoxical nature and they require faith. Most of the major decision you make in life require faith.

I believe Jesus is fully God and fully man but I cannot explain it. His unique birth helps me understand but that does not dispel all the mystery. Jesus entered this world and the world of flesh and blood through the portal of Mary’s womb. He existed before He was incarnated. He was the same age of His father but older than His mother. He was conceived by the Holy Spirit not Joseph’s sperm. Therefore, Jesus did not inherit our sinful nature. He took our human nature from Mary but He took God’s sinless nature from the Holy Spirit. Jesus was fully human but He was not twisted, perverted in his thinking. He could sin I suppose but He had no desire to sin. It was as natural for Jesus to be perfect as it is for me to be imperfect. He was tempted but not in the same way that you and I are tempted: we are tempted to rely on the flesh, He was tempted to rely on His divine powers. You and I have never been tempted to turn rock in to bread or jump from high building without a parachute and it is because we don’t have supernatural capability; He did.

  1. One reason for Jesus’ virgin birth is that it identified Him as the Messiah. Isaiah 7:14 prophesied that a virgin would be with child. Ever since that prophecy, the Jews had looked for that particular sign. God uses miracles to validate His messengers. A virgin birth is a powerful validation.
  2. Another reason for the virgin birth is that having a biological father would have annulled Jesus’ deity. He could not have been the son of Joseph and the Son of God at the same time. Every person born of man has inherited Adam’s sin nature (Romans 5:12, 17, 19).
  3. The virgin birth is also a picture of GRACE. Joseph had no part whatsoever in the conception of Jesus. Mary’s role was passive; she merely accepted God’s gift. As Ephesians 2:8-9 says, the work of salvation is done by God alone. Neither holiness nor salvation can be brought about by the effort of man.
  4. Since man sinned, technically for God to remain holy, a man had to die for those sins. Jesus became human so that He could qualify as our sacrifice for sin. Jesus is our atonement. He is the lamb without spot or blemish. Thus He had to God-Man to fulfill this role. The Just {Jesus} became the Justifier.
  5. Jesus is Unique. He is not merely a man as some would have us believe. Napoleon said, “I know men and I tell you that Jesus Christ is no mere man.”
  6. To deny the virgin birth is antithetical to the Christian faith. It is a denial that a virgin with conceive and give birth to the Messiah. It is a denial that Jesus is God. It is a denial that the word of God is infallible.

  1. We live in a Republic: what is the difference between a Republic and the Reign of Christ?
  2. Which heresy is more destructive: to deny the deity of Christ or to deny His humanity?
  3. What encourages you about Jesus humanity?
  4. What excites you about Jesus deity?
  5. Can you name something in fiction that comes close to the story of Jesus birth?
  6. In your personal opinion, who is the most popular woman in history?
  7. Why are we having a lesson on Jesus birth in March?

The Cosmic Billboard

February 16, 2015

Celebrate Jesus.crimsonjpg

There are things about God that people cannot see—his eternal power and all that makes him God. But since the beginning of the world, those things have been easy for people to understand. They are made clear in what God has made. So people have no excuse for the evil they do.

~Romans 1:20, NCV

A billboard never exist for itself it always points to something else, something greater.

~Chip Ingram

my thoughts red

In His infinite wisdom, God has put up a cosmic intergalactic billboard; we call it creation and it is awesome to say the least. When you see a garden, you know that somewhere there is a gardener. You may not see the gardener in the garden when you drive by but you do not doubt for a minute his existence.  Every person with sight can see this cosmic billboard which points to the Creator.

In those times when you have made up your mind that you will or will not do a certain thing, are you open to God’s will? Would you consider doing it God’s way? We live in a culture that has rejected God, refusing to acknowledge His presence or give Him glory. We have rebelled against his word, rules and commands. We are determined to get our way and God allows us to pursue our will even though it leads to destruction. From the left, we hear the cry, “If God loves me, He surely wouldn’t keep me form doing what makes me happy and living the way I choose.” We must realize that this sinful and self-centered philosophy is going to eat at our soul like an acid, it will also alienate us from God and it will bring certain death to our relationships and eventually to our body.”

But just experiencing God’s wonder and grace didn’t seem to mean much to the Israelites—most of them were defeated by temptation during the hard times in the desert, and God was not pleased.

1 Corinthians 10, MSG

Creating a god you can control and comprehend is called paganism.

my thoughts red

You know I am fond of list and you can find one in 1 Corinthians 10: the proposition Paul makes is we should learn from the mistakes of others. The mistakes the Israelites made are recorded as a warning to us not to do the same…

  • We must be on guard so that we do not get caught up in demanding our way.
  • We must not turn our worship into a circus that is designed to bring pleasure to us rather than pleasure to God. [Worship is never about us: no mere human is worthy of worship]
  • We must not be sexually promiscuous. The Israelites were and 23,000 died in one day. Our politically correct society will not tell the truth: “Promiscuous and perverted sex is highly destructive both to soul and body.”
  • We must never put God to the test when it comes to serving our interest: we must be devoted to serving His interest. The Israelites were selfish and God unleashed an epidemic of poisonous snakes.
  • We must stop stirring up discontent–the Israelites did and it cost them their future and the promise land.

Dr. Junior Hill

Dr. Junior Hill coming to DBC August 21, 2016

As a part of the celebration of my last month at DBC, Junior has agreed to come and preach for us on Sunday morning, August 21, 2016. Remember, this man has an open invitation to practically every Southern Baptist church in the country. What an honor it is to have Junior as a friend and to have him preach for us one more time God willing. Neither Junior nor I are assuming anything: God may have other plans and His plans are always better than ours. At the same time, I have to tell you that Joe David and I are excited. Everybody loves Junior.

The Secret

One day, one friend asked another, “How is it that you are always so happy?
You have so much energy, and you never seem to get down.”

With her eyes smiling, she said, “I know the Secret!”

“What secret is that?” To which she replied,

“I’ll tell you all about it, but you have to promise to

share the Secret with others.”

“The Secret is this: I have learned there is little I can do

in my life that will make me truly happy.

I must depend on Christ to make me happy and to meet my needs.

When a need arises in my life, I have to trust Jesus to supply according to HIS riches.

I have learned most of the time I don’t need half of what I think I do.

He has never let me down.

Since I learned that ‘Secret’, I am happy.”

The questioner’s first thought was, “That’s too simple!”

But upon reflecting over her own life she recalled how she thought a bigger house

would make her happy, but it didn’t!

She thought a better paying job would make her happy, but it hadn’t.

When did she realize her greatest happiness?

Sitting on the floor with her grandchildren,

playing games, eating pizza or reading a story,

a simple gift from God.

Now you know it too!  We can’t depend on people to make us happy.

Only Jesus Christ in His infinite wisdom can do that.

Trust HIM!

And now I pass the Secret on to you!

So once you get it, what will you do?

YOU have to tell someone the Secret, too!

That GOD in His wisdom will take care of YOU!

When Jesus heard this, he told them, “Healthy people don’t need a doctor—sick people do. I have come to call not those who think they are righteous, but those who know they are sinners.”

~Mark 2:17, NLT

I know two things: Christ is a great Savior and I am a great sinner.

~John Newton

I love the NLT: in my opinion it gets Mark 2:17 right…notice what Jesus said, “I have come to call not those who think they are righteous but those who know they are sinners.” Two kinds of people in the world: the lost and the saved; the redeemed and the unredeemed; the repentant and the unrepentant; those who think they are righteous and those who know they are sinners. Which group do you belong to?

The Breaking Point

Prayer For REVIVAL in America

Prayer For REVIVAL in America

When all the Israelites saw that the king had not listened to them, the people answered the king:

“We have no portion in David. No share in Jesse’s son! To your tents, O Israel.”

I Kings 12:16, JPS

People will stair at you and talk about you too, make it worth their while.

~Harry Winston

The Israelites had been pushed to the breaking point by Solomon. His massive building programs were expensive and were a huge burden on tax payers. While Solomon lived in a luxurious palace [gated community] and walked on floors that were covered with gold, the common people were struggling just to keep their heads above the water. Rehoboam was not a child when he became king: he was 41 years old and he made a critical mistake in refusing to listen to the people. He rebuffed them and spoke to them disrespectfully, unaware that he was pushing them to the breaking point. Mr. Webster gives us three meaning for the term “Breaking Point”: [1] The point at which a person gives way under stress [2] The point at which a situation becomes critical and [3] the point at which something loses force or validity. It is the third definition that is applicable here. Once you push a person to this point, they do not care what you think and they are not afraid of what you can do. They become apathetic to anything pertaining to you. Rehoboam could threaten all he wanted but it was too late, they no longer cared what he did.
This is vividly illustrated in the life of Nicodemus the teacher of teachers [Professor]. He came to Jesus by night because he did not want the Jews to know that he was interested in what Jesus had to say. At some point, we do not know exactly when, he became a believer in Jesus Christ but he kept it a secret in fear of the Jews and his peers. When he saw what they did to Jesus at Calvary, something snapped. The cowardly Nicodemus became a bold Nicodemus. He gave aid to Joseph of Arimathea in taking Jesus from the cross and laying Him in a tomb and he did it in broad open daylight because he not longer cared what the Jews thought.
At some point in your life, you need to come to a breaking point where something snaps and you stop letting what others think control how you fell. We all have a problem with this: women more than men and especially young women.
