SCRIPTURE

And He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?” The man said, “The woman whom You gave to be with me, she gave me from the tree, and I ate.”

~Genesis 3:11-12, NASB

QUOTE

Sin is definitely in every single heart that beats.

~Billy Graham

COMMENTARY

God will hold us accountable just as He did Adam. You may take your sin lightly but God does not. He ask Adam a simple question, “Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?” Simple question and very direct. It deserved a direct answer and that answer is in the last two words that Adam spoke, “I ate.” God said “did you eat” and all Adam had to say was “I ate” but that is not all he said. First he says, “The woman YOU gave me, she gave to me”. It may be subtle, but Adam is blaming God for his sin and he throws Eve under the bus in the same breath. Do we think that alibis, excuses, blaming others or just flat out denial of our sin is going to change the consequences. If so, you need to think again.

EXTRA

We had good services but I was disappointed in the attendance. We do have some sickness but it’s mostly the same old same old: self-interest before His interest. Billy Graham agrees with me that this selfish inclination is the essence of sin. We have so many needs, I don’t understand how any believer cannot be concerned about REVIVAL. It is what it is which gives us all the more reason to pray. On a lighter side, I blogged about GIFT CARDS and mentioned that I had one in my billfold that did not get thrown away like my Huntsville Hospital parking card when my sweetie changed my billfold out a few months back. She came and ask for the card and I gave it to her; it had $50 on it and she has been to McDonald’s twice. Remember the service will begin at 7:00; pre-service prayer meeting at 6:30. Pray for REVIVAL and MY HOPE.

COMMENTARY

I finished my door to door visitation for My Hope on Friday. I’ve made over 40 visits and made about 16 stops on Friday. When I began writing in my journal Friday night, I recorded an inaccuracy. Before I caught my self, I wrote in my journal that my visits were about 50/50 but the still small voice of conscience cried out, “Not true, not true.” So I started recounted my visits and when I had totaled them up, only one person was negative. There was one other who was reluctant to take the flyer but once he understood that the party was at our house and not the church, he took it. Only one man told me that he was not interested and did not want a flyer–one out of sixteen, not 50/50. Why did I assume that my visits were 50/50 between positive and negative? I think it is because our default thinking is set on negative and we have to think a little extra to think positive.

Some people, some very nice people who live very close and read the blog everyday [and that I love dearly], don’t like the new LCBS books and I didn’t like them either when I first saw them. Now I must confess a bad sin for a preacher, I don’t have to make myself study the lessons. These lessons have been speaking to me every week and as I studies Friday night, I made a note of four things we all need:

  • We all need Affirmation–we need to know that someone believes in us. It could be a parent, a friend or even a spouse.
  • We all need Convictions–we need to know where we draw the line, where enough is enough.
  • We all need Courage–enough to stand alone if necessary and enough to confront a person who is in error.
  • We all need to be Careful–People are hurting in more ways than you can imagine. Don’t confront without facts or love. Remember, our goal is restoration or redemption.
  • We all need a Swing and a Gator–just kidding and by the grace of God, I have both and use both. Both were gifts and one of the two is about wore out.

A word of gospel truth: Jesus believes in you. Do you believe in Jesus?

EXTRA

As you prepare your heart for today’s LIFE CHANGING BIBLE STUDY class, make a note of people who have believed in you. One of the reasons you are what you are today is that others have affirmed you along the way. Perhaps you should thank them if they are still around to thank. I thought of three people instantly: My mother, Bro. Inman and Bro. Kidd. Bro. Kidd is the only one still with us here and I will make it a point to visit him in the next two months. Remember my friend George Ray Edwards who is in Health South in Huntsville. Our good friend Tom Bennich fell yesterday going to the mailbox. He cut his knee pretty bad but he should be alright.

Don’t forget the prayer meeting at 8:15…praying for REVIVAL and MY HOPE.

“Because your men explored the land for forty days, you must wander in the wilderness for forty years—a year for each day, suffering the consequences of your sins.”

~Numbers 14:34, NLT

QUOTE

No sin is small. It is against an infinite God, and may have consequences immeasurable. No grain of sand is small in the mechanism of a watch.

~Jeremy Taylor

COMMENTARY

The unfaithful spies spend 40 days searching out the land but they brought back an evil report and destroyed the faith and courage of the Israelites. For this sin, they were given 40 years in the wilderness of wandering. We always seem to reap more than we sow. One sin can have enormous consequences. Adam and Eve committed one sin and we are still reaping the consequences. The Jews said at the trial of Jesus, “Let His blood be on us and our children.” This one sin by one generation has affected every generation of Jews since.

“We cannot fight those people! They are much stronger than we are. ”So those men gave a report that discouraged the people. They said, “The land we saw is full of strong people. They are strong enough to easily defeat anyone who goes there. We saw the giant Nephilim people there!  We felt like little grasshoppers. Yes, we were like grasshoppers to them!”

QUOTE

Two types of voices command your attention today. Negative ones fill your mind with doubt, bitterness, and fear. Positive ones purvey hope and strength. Which one will you choose to heed?

~Max Lucado

COMMENTARY

The Anakim or Nephilim were giants like Goliath. Before the conquest they controlled cities like Hebron which was first called Kirjath-arba and some believe the name came from four Nephilim brothers that either founded or ruled the city. Caleb will eventually conquer this area inhabited by these over sized people. If you remember, King Og of Bashan was Nephilim and his bed was 13 1/2 feet long. Goliath was a descendant of the Nephilim and he was over 9 feet tall. They were intimidating in size but not gifted with coordination or intelligence. With all this in mind, the spies still exaggerated their findings. They said “we looked like insects in comparison” and that was not true. Their report was very negative and very discouraging. The news of their report spread through the camp like a wild fire. The people were so upset that they considered stoning Moses and Aaron. Joshua was taking notes. Forty years later when he leads the Israelites in the conquest of Jericho, he doesn’t allow them to talk. He understood the power of negative thinking. All it would have taken is for one negative Israelite to say, “We can’t do this; it is crazy. It will never work. Where did Joshua come up with this lame idea?”

Don’t kid yourself: there is power in negative thinking; it is a faith killer. Negativity spawns fear and panic. I have seen it stop a movement dead in its tracks. All it takes if for the right person to say, “We can’t do it,” and its over. We all remember what happened to Joshua and Caleb but do you know what happened to the other ten who were fearful and negative? [Numbers 14:37]

I’m torn between two desires: I long to go and be with Christ, which would be far better for me. But for your sakes, it is better that I continue to live.

~Philippians 1:22-23, NLT

QUOTE

I shall hear in Heaven.

COMMENTARY

Paul said to his dear friends at Philippi, “To me, the only important thing about living is Christ. And even death would be for my benefit. If I continue living here on earth, I will be able to work for the Lord. But what would I choose—to live or to die? I don’t know. It would be a hard choice. Sometimes I want to leave this life and be with Christ. That would be much better for me; however, you people need me here alive.” Are we hearing the Apostle right: does he see physical death as a promotion? Yes he does and I can tell you why…Heaven means a better

  1. Body: these bodies of clay get old, they wear out and they ache with pain. Paul said, “While we live in this tent [body], we have burdens and so we complain. I don’t mean that we want to remove this tent, but we want to be clothed with our heavenly body. Then this body that dies will be covered with life.”
  2. Home: again, I quote Paul from 2 Corinthians 5, “We know that our body—the tent we live in here on earth—will be destroyed. But when that happens, God will have a home for us to live in. It will not be the kind of home people build here. It will be a home in heaven that will continue forever.” You may have a great home here but the one in heaven will be better.
  3. View: We are looking through stained glass now but in heaven we will see things as they really are. Many of our questions will not have to be answered; just seeing heaven and Jesus will perfect our understanding.
  4. Fellowship: I am a Baptist so you know I love fellowship but our fellowship will get better in heaven. Paul said that “while we are in this body, we are away from the LORD.” He did not mean that the LORD is not with us now but he is referring to his visible presence. A mystical presence is better than no presence but we all prefer visible presence. Can you imagine what it will be like to see Jesus.

COMMENTARY

I really have not read a version that I don’t like and the Easy To Read Version has really been a blessing. I am finishing up this month and I’m in the book of Leviticus. When I come to a verse that really stands out, I highlight it and these are the highlights from Leviticus chapter 19 which I read yesterday.

  • Verse 16–You must not go around spreading false stories against other people. Don’t do anything that would put your neighbor’s life in danger. I am the Lord.
  • Verse 18–Forget about the wrong things people do to you. Don’t try to get even. Love your neighbor as yourself. I am the Lord.
  • Verse  28–You must not make any tattoo marks on yourselves. I am the Lord.
  • Verse 32–“Show honor to old people. Stand up when they come into the room. And show respect to your leaders.”

I really like verse 32 and I bet you are not surprised.

Mary, Martha and MY HOPE

Pray For MY HOPE

Pray For MY HOPE

MY HOPE

Dr. Billy Graham will be 95 on November 7 which is the scheduled night for MY HOPE parties to begin. Dr. Graham will be speaking to the nation on this historic night. There are many professing Christians and even Para church groups that are ignoring MY HOPE. They are pressing on with their agenda as though MY HOPE was a passing fad. I believe that Dr. Graham is America’s pastor and the LORD laid this on his heart. I believe it is a God thing. I believe Dr. Graham has been sitting at Jesus feet. We have a lot of Martha’s who are doing things in Jesus name but in reality, they are pursuing their own selfish agenda. Martha was doing a good thing for Jesus but He neither commanded it or desired it: it was all her idea and in most instances, it would have been a good idea. I beg you folks, don’t be distracted by good things from doing the main thing and I am convinced that MY HOPE is the main thing.

SCRIPTURE

Mary, sat at the Lord’s feet, listening to what he taught. But Martha was distracted by the big dinner she was preparing.

~Luke 10:39-40, NLT

QUOTE

Evangelism is not a professional job for a few trained men, but is instead the unrelenting responsibility of every person who belongs to the company of Jesus.

~Elton Trueblood

COMMENTARY

Martha was not doing anything bad or evil but she was distracted from the main thing. Sometimes we allow good things to keep us from the main thing. Martha assumed that she knew what Jesus desired and needed but she was actually trying to serve Him her way. His hunger for food was not as great as His hunger for love and understanding. The most difficult thing in life is to keep our focus on the main thing.

EXTRA

I question the judgment of America. We have made some very poor and idiotic decisions. Dr. Graham warned us last September about the danger of re-electing a man who has no Christian values and we did not listen. Dr. Graham made Gallops top 50 “Most Admired Persons” for 50 of the last 53 years. This includes 49 consecutive years running. This is something that no other person has accomplished. I challenge you to go to YouTube and listen to Michael W. Smith song written for Dr. Grahams 95th birthday…it is called TAKE ME HOME. Folks, this great saint is ready to depart but before he goes, he wants to see REVIVAL in America. It is a crying shame that American’s, including millions of professing Christians are turning a deaf ear. I dare you to watch the video.

Prayer For REVIVAL in America

Prayer For REVIVAL in America

MY HOPE

The most important part of My Hope America is prayer. Make a list of those you hope to invite and start praying for them right now. This is the key. The fact that each of us may have friends and family who will one day die and spend eternity separated from God in Hell ought to keep us up at night. It ought to break our hearts. This November brings a fantastic opportunity for you to make a difference in their lives. More than 22,000 churches from every state in the nation have already signed up to participate this November. More are added every day. You can find all the details at MyHopeWithBillyGraham.org.

SCRIPTURE

Then Abraham said, “I thought no one in this place respected God. I thought someone would kill me to get Sarah.  She is my wife, but she is also my sister. She is the daughter of my father but not the daughter of my mother.

~Genesis 20:11-12, ERV

QUOTE

“God uses sinners; they’re all His has to work with.”

~Elisabeth Elliot

COMMENTARY

Abimelech [My father is king] was a Philistine who live in Gerar which is Southwest of Judah. Abraham was a Bedouin who migrated there for a time and as was his custom, he used a half truth about his relationship with Sarah as a cover. He let it be known that she was his sister, which she was [both had the same father but a different mother] but he did not tell the complete truth, that she was also his wife. Sarah is between 75-90 but yet a very attractive woman. When Abimelech sees her, he takes her in to his harem. Long story short, the LORD reveals to Abimelech in a dream that Sarah was Abraham’s wife and that he needed to return her to her husband immediately which he does.

Abimelech then confronts Abraham about his dishonesty. I am sure Abraham was embarrassed. The interesting thing is that Abraham did nothing right and yet he profits to the tune of 1,000 pieces of silver plus sheep, cattle and slaves. Abimelech does nothing wrong and yet he pays Abraham to leave his territory. The more amazing thing is that God said to Abimelech in the same dream, “Abraham is a prophet, he will pray for you and you will live.” Abraham did intercede for Abimelech and his household and there was healing. The women had been stricken with barrenness. What lessons can we learn?

  • Prophets are not perfect. God can hit a hard lick with a crooked stick.
  • Abraham made an embarrassing mistake but he did not quit. We all do things that bring embarrassment and shame but we don’t quit. God used Abraham as an intercessor to help Abimelech and they became friends.
  • Abraham let his insecurity get the best of him. He lied because he was afraid. The father of faith lacked faith. We cannot let our insecurities control our life. We must be honest about them, deal with them and grow in faith.

Guess what day it is? Hump Day!

I visited Rayburn Waldrop yesterday. Rayburn is on life support. He is in the rotating air bed like Tray. I couldn’t find anyone to talk to but I know he is in very critical condition. I also got word yesterday evening that Regina Shipley’s dad passed away. I do not know any details. Hope to get some info today. Big Mama dragged me to the Sav-A-Life banquet last night: she loves those eating meetings. The speaker was very good and he was very brief. The cheese cake was great! I don’t say as much about abortion as I once did but I have not changed my position: Abortion is murder and it will be the death of this nation. God works via the process and He never hurries: the fact that He has not already brought us down for killing innocent babies does not mean He will not. He may be in the process of bringing us down at this very moment. All the more reason to pray for revival and MY HOPE. The MY HOPE music features Michael W. Smith and David says it is very good. I have not down loaded it yet. Hope to do it today.

Then God said to me, “Son of man, listen to every word I say to you and remember them. Then go to all of your people in exile and tell them, ‘This is what the Lord God says ….’ They will not listen, and they will not stop sinning, but you must still tell them my message.”

QUOTE

Inspired preaching offends the backslider but a real disciple is delighted when the truth brings him to his knees.

~Billy Sunday

COMMENTARY

God spoke to Ezekiel and then told him to speak to the exiles. This is the way preaching works, God speaks and then we speak. If God does not speak, we have nothing of substance to say. I love the story of the old deacon who when called on to pray the offertory would always pray for the pastor to have unction. The pastor was irritated by the prayer and thought he would put the old deacon on the spot. In front of group one day, the pastor said to him, “Brother, you are always praying for me to have unction, please give us a definition of unction.” “Well,” said the old deacon, “I don’t know exactly what it is but I know when you have it and when you don’t.”

A good person produces good things from the treasury of a good heart, and an evil person produces evil things from the treasury of an evil heart. What you say flows from what is in your heart.

~Luke 6:45, NLT

QUOTE

The command “Be ye perfect” is not idealistic gas. Nor is it a command to do the impossible. He {Jesus} is going to make us into creatures that can obey His command.

~C.S. Lewis

COMMENTARY

Let me ask you a question: do you want to be a bad person or do you have a deep desire to be a good person. Very few of us want to be evil. We do not want to have outburst of rage [road or other]. We don’t want to have contempt for others or be obsessed with lust. We don’t really want to curse, coerce, or manipulate others but we do. We are like Paul in Romans 7…I want to do what is good, but I don’t do it.  I don’t do the good that I want to do. I do the evil that I don’t want to do. So if I do what I don’t want to do, then I am not really the one doing it. It is the sin living in me that does it. Why would Jesus command us to be perfect as He is perfect unless He intended by the power of His grace to make us perfect. Dallas Willard says, “Jesus actually knows how to enable people to be good.” I am not good but I am willing and anxious for Him to make me good. I think it is the deepest desire of my heart.
