Christmas Hope

December 16, 2015

My mercy and justice are coming soon. My salvation is on the way. My strong arm will bring justice to the nations. All distant lands will look to Me and wait in hope for My powerful arm.

~Isaiah 51:5, NLT

Man can exist without hope but he cannot live without hope.

Can you imagine a world without Christ? I am very grateful to be living on this side of the cross. We have so much more than our O.T. counterparts:

  1. We have access to the throne of grace. They had to approach through a priest.
  2. We have a High Priest who can be trusted. They had the likes of Caiaphas who was rotten to the core.
  3. We have the printed word of God including the words of Jesus. They a limited number of scrolls but not the O. T. as we know it. The bible is a huge blessing.
  4. They had Passover but we have Easter and Christmas. No comparison. I had rather celebrate the birth of a Lamb than to slaughter one, hadn’t you?

For centuries, the Jews waited on the Promised One, the Messiah, the Seed of woman who would crush the serpent, the great Prophet who would speak for God, Isaiah’s great Light and Prince of Peace. He would be the Son of David who would rule with fairness and justice. He would be the Liberator of the oppressed and the hope of nations.

The one thing that believer’s have, in any set of circumstances, is HOPE. Never think lightly of hope, it is the key to living sucessfully.

  • Gary Garner got good news. They are going to do two more treatments as a precaution but his PET Scan was good; THANK YOU JESUS!
  • Heath’s surgery went good. He went to ICU but should get a room today. It’s a tough surgery that leaves one feeling miserable [said the Doctor]. That is not his exact words but its a good translation. He should begin to feel better in a few days.
  • We have found a violinist: Beautiful Hannah Marie Clardy Garnett is a violinist and I did not know this until yesterday. She also knows Haley’s brother: the two have performed professionally. One tiny problem, she and Hunter live in B’town. I told her she had a standing invitation to play the violin at DBC. Maybe we will get to hear her during the holidays.
  • I forgot to talk with Adam last night but there is a change that we will do Jace’s baptism this Sunday.

Give Me New Wine

“But no one who drinks the old wine seems to want the new wine. ‘The old wine is just fine,’ they say.”

my thoughts red

Jesus was uniquely refreshing, a breath of fresh air, totally unlike any rabbi the Jews have ever encountered. He is the only person in history who fulfilled or could fulfill all the qualifications of the Messiah and yet the Jews as a whole rejected HIM. He offered them something new and exciting but they choose to cling to the old and familiar. In Philippians 3 Paul tells how he let go of the old to embrace the new: he turned his back on the law and legalism to embrace Christ and grace. Things Paul once treasured became rubbish to him because he had a new love, a new passion that compelled him to let go of the old.

Judaism was the seed from which Christianity sprang but the flower {Christ} is more glorious than the seed {Judaism}. Jesus told the religious Jewish establishment, “You are trying to put new wine in old skins and it will not work; you will lose both the wine and the skins.” Jesus words have been fulfilled: The Jews clung to a religion that has become a faint shadow of Old Testament Judaism. They have no Temple, no sacrifice, no High Priest, and no atonement because they rejected the SAVIOR.

Are there some things you need to let go of; things you need to stop clinging to so you can embrace the new. If you don’t make a break with your past, you will miss the joy of the present. Let go of your trespasses and the trespasses against you. Embrace Jesus and live in the freedom of His grace. O Hallelujah, O What A Savior Haley and Charity are going to sing that for me someday.

  • Today we pray for those having TRIALS and TRIBULATION. I appreciate you praying for my friend Kenny. He has been feeling a little better lately. Thank you for praying for Jaxson, Lela’s Hazel’s son, he is better. I have some friends that are going through a rough time and you do too…let pause and pray for them right now!
  • SENIOR ADULT CHRISTMAS PARTY at Cracker Barrel Friday at 9:30 am.
  • I think we were down again last night: my group is holding it’s on but overall we were down: I would guess 150 or so. It is hard to recover from these breaks.
  • Mandy put a sheet in your LCBS notebooks last week about sponsoring children for Christmas. Charles class always leads the field in this: they took four. Our class is doing two and Jason’s two. We can get more names from the school if you want a Christmas project for your class.

Charming, Not!

October 11, 2012

SCRIPTURE: He had no beauty to attract our eyes, no charm to make us choose Him. [Isaiah 53:2, Moffatt]

QUOTE: Charm is deceptive, and beauty does not last. ~Hebrew Proverb

COMMENTARY: Isaiah prophecies that the Messiah will not be an attractive person in terms of His physical presence and that He will not be charming. The word charming means alluring, appealing, attractive, bewitching, captivating, glamorous or enchanting. In other words, the incarnate Jesus would not have been a big hit in Hollywood. The world system rejected Him 2,000 years ago and they would reject Him again today: they are in fact doing that very thing. Psalm 2 states it very clearly, “Why are the nations so angry? Why do they waste their time with futile plans? The kings of the earth prepare for battle; the rulers plot together against the Lord and against his anointed one.” It is politically incorrect to even speak of the deity of Christ in public. The world scoffs: how could God become a man? Why would He born in a stable? Why was He garbed in an unattractive body? Why would He allow Himself to be crucified? Either He is God as He said He was or He is a lunatic and a liar. He cannot be anything in between. Jesus was so good that He didn’t need physical beauty and so real that He refused to charm. The world can’t except that but I can. I’ll take character over appearance any day of the week and twice on Sunday.

EXTRA: A simple question as been posed with the intention of challenging my intellect or lack thereof–The question is, “If a pastor baptizing a woman with child, does it count as two baptisms?” There is a simple answer: yes and no. Yes a child in the womb is a person and thus you have baptized two persons but no you do not count it as two baptisms in your annual report which you send to Montgomery for the glory of the LORD. You have to make the questions a little harder. I could have answered this one in the 2nd grade.

Darryl and Issac came by to see us yesterday morning: they dress just a like. I wanted you to see this–Notice Issac’s boots. They are just like granddads which I did not get into the picture.
