The Wilderness

Scripture

Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted there by the devil.
~Matthew 4:1

Quote

“Most people don’t mind obstacles, as long as they don’t get in the way.”
~Chip Ingram
You cannot move [on foot] from Mount Sinai to the Promise Land without going through a wilderness. When Pharaoh finally let the Israelites go, God did not lead them along the main road that runs through Philistine territory, even though that was the shortest route to the Promised Land. God said, “If the people are faced with a battle, they might change their minds and return to Egypt.” So God led them in a roundabout way through the wilderness toward the Red Sea. God lead them to the wilderness to get them away for Egypt [world] and unto Himself. In the wilderness, they had freedom to worship and sacrifice; plus it was a spiritual boot camp.
God lead Jesus into the wilderness just as He lead ancient Israel. God leads every believer into the wilderness but He does not intend for us to stay in the wilderness.  The wilderness is a place of solitude, a place where God miraculously provides by His amazing grace. Moses spent two thirds of his life in the wilderness, John the Baptist preached in the wilderness, and David wrote some of his best Psalms while in the wilderness. The wilderness is a good place to learn but not a good place to live. God’s design is not simply to lead us to the wilderness but to lead us through the wilderness. Only the rebellious stay in the wilderness. The Christian life is never stagnant–it is a constant moving onward and upward.

Complaining

December 9, 2015

Scripture

There, too, the whole community of Israel complained about Moses and Aaron.

Exodus 16:3

Quote

Cheerfulness in adversity, is the mark of a mature believer.

~Randolph Tasker

my-thoughts-red

Notice the “there too” in the scripture above. Basically, what there too means: everywhere the Israelites went, they complained. Like modern day Israelites, we complain at the Kroger’s [what have they done with the white sauce], we complain at work, we complained at church and even while on vacation. Bill Cagle was fond of saying, “Some folks would complain if you hung them with a new rope.”

Why did the Israelites complain incessantly?

  1. They were immature, not use to freedom or responsibility.
  2. They had selfish and stubborn natures.
  3. They had a distorted memory. [16:3b, “There we sat around pots filled with meat and ate all the bread we wanted. But now you have brought us into this wilderness to starve us all to death.” [Yeah, right, they were slaves working like dogs and being treated like dogs and Moses didn’t make a single one of them leave: they choose to follow him]
  4. They didn’t like unpleasant circumstances. [Who does?] Who did they blame? [Moses of course] Ultimately, who is responsible for our circumstances? It’s not Moses!

I’m sitting around with a cripple leg and who’s fault is it? I’ll tell you, it is my fault. I tried to act like a teenager and I refused to ask people to do things for me that I am used to doing for myself. Perhaps I didn’t trust them, didn’t want them to get hurt and knew they couldn’t do it to please me. So Mr. Do Everything did it himself. God could heal me in an instant, so ultimately, I guess I could hold Him responsible but I’m not blaming Him.  I doubt seriously that He intends to heal me in an instant because I think He is teaching me a lesson through the unpleasant situation? Do I have a reason to be angry with anyone? NO! It may be my nature to complain but I don’t have the right.

Follow The Cloud

SCRIPTURE

Whenever the cloud lifted from over the sacred tent, the people of Israel would break camp and follow it. And wherever the cloud settled, the people of Israel would set up camp.

~Numbers 9:17, NLT

QUOTE

a cs lewis Gods presence

my-thoughts-red

God is omnipresent, it is impossible for Him not to be present; as David said, wherever you go, He is there. But God knew that the Israelites were very immature in their faith so He gave them a manifestation of His glorious presence. This visible presence came in the form of a cloud, not just any cloud but the shekinah glory cloud. At night it was a fire cloud giving light and comfort to the timid Israelites; in the day it was a hovering cloud that gave them shelter from the heat. When the cloud lifted and moved, the Israelites broke camp and followed the Cloud.

God has given us a different kind of cloud; it is not visible nor external. It is invisible and internal. God has given us His Spirit to comfort and guide; to enlighten and to shelter. Revivals happens when we yield control of our lives to the Holy Spirit. Revivals are never flesh driven, they are always Spirit lead. Would you consider surrendering control of your life to the blessed Holy Spirit? Would you join me in praying this prayer by John W. Peterson:

Come Holy Spirit dark is the hour
We need Your filling
Your love and Your mighty power
Move now among us stir us we pray
Come Holy Spirit REVIVE the church today

I said, “Do you want this one?” Pointing to the cheaper model on my finger, she said, “Nye, it’s not worth anything but I got a $150 bucks for the other one.” Poor old Jeremy, he took his off because it was getting too tight and she had Will melt it and converted to cash. Jeremy and I are upset. Our wedding bands had huge sentimental value: I can’t really put a price tag on mine. Big Mama was giving her the hush sign but Holly ran through the signs and spilled her guts. That kid tells everything and I can’t figure out who she takes that after.

SCRIPTURE

“We remember the fish we used to eat for free in Egypt. And we had all the cucumbers, melons, leeks, onions, and garlic we wanted.”

~Numbers 11:5, NLT

QUOTE

Slaves always eat free.

~Ya’akov

my-thoughts-red

Moses lead close to 2 million Israelites through a wilderness that produces no food and little water. A generation of Israelites died in this wilderness but not from starvation or thirst; they died because they rebelled against God. In miraculous fashion God provided for this massive horde with bread from heaven and water from the Rock. Instead of being grateful for God’s supernatural provision, the Israelites grumbled about the menu. There was no meat; in Egypt they had fish and it was free.

Sure it was free, they were slaves. Why do farmers feed cattle? Because they are valuable at the market and so are slaves. A master would be foolish to starve a slave. What if Joseph could have declared “Free Agency,” how much would a slave of Joseph’s caliber be worth. I think Joseph would put those greedy athlete’s of today in the shade. He would be worth at least a billion. The Egyptians were not going to starve their slaves: all slaves eat free and their housing is covered.

The Israelites were still thinking like slaves: they wanted free stuff without any responsibility. A free man has to think, he has to take responsibility but the Israelites preferred slavery and a lash on the back to taking responsibility. Liberals are such hypocrites: they want to make an issue out of slavery and the poor idiots don’t realize that they are caught in a far worse kind of slavery than any of their forefathers. The idea that only blacks have suffered from slavery is ridiculous. A lot of blacks and whites are slaves today because they get the free lunches. The democratic party doesn’t mind; they are the ones who have created the bondage. This gives them the leverage to tell these dupes how to vote. Obama got the black vote including so called republicans like Colon Benedict Arnold Powell but Ben Carson will not get their vote. Ben loves freedom more than a free lunch. He took responsibility for his life. I am not suggesting that Carson is the only black man who has done so but he is in a minority. Alan West is an independent thinker and there are others but how I long for the blacks and Jews to wake up and realize that they are being used by a vicious political machine. Of course, some of the rich Jews are a part of the machine.

Hope Verses Presumption

Celebrate Jesus.crimsonjpg

SCRIPTURE

Finally, they cried out to the Lord for help, saying, “We have sinned against you because we have abandoned you as our God and have served the images of Baal.”

~Judges 10:10, NLT

QUOTE

In our petitions to God, let us look upon Him as a just, as well as a merciful God; and neither despair or presume upon his mercy.

~Abraham Wright

my thoughts red

If you have studied the period of the Judges, you know that Israel was inconsistent in their faith. They would drift toward idolatry, selfish and wicked living; then come under bondage to some prevailing power. In their bondage they cried out to the LORD and again and again, He had mercy upon them. In chapter 10 there is such a prayer but God gave a quick reply: “You’ve been worshiping Baal, so why don’t you pray to Baal.”

Then the Israelites got desperate, and pleaded with the Lord, “We have sinned. Punish us as you see fit, only rescue us today from our enemies.” Still no answer from God so the Israelites decided to repent, get rid of their idols and serve Yahweh. Then God saw their misery and had mercy.

I refuse to throw in the towel and I disagree with those who say that leadership doesn’t matter. God delivered Israel by sending them a good leader. I am convinced that a good leader would help us; that leader could be Ben Carson, I don’t know. He says he will defund Planned Parenthood [Abortion Provider]. God is capable of raising up a good leader and He could bring America to her knees, in seconds, without working up a sweat. On the other hand, God could give us what we deserve.

The bottom line is: we dare not be proud or presumptuous but neither do we give in to hopeless despair.

When I went back in, a young girl was standing behind the counter with my ice cream cone in hand. She never said a word but gave me a strange look. It was not a look of pity or sympathy: it was more like contempt.

Ingratitude

April 12, 2015

Celebrate Jesus.crimsonjpg

SCRIPTURE

They stubbornly tested God in their hearts, demanding the foods they craved.

~Psalm 78:18, NLT

QUOTE

The more we count the blessing we have, the less we crave the luxuries we don’t have.

~Chip Ingram

my thoughts red

What happens to a child when the parents placate and pacify every whim and wish? The child becomes spoiled and has a bratty attitude. God was good to the Israelites. He redeemed them from the iron furnace in Egypt with His strong right hand. It took ten miracles to convince Pharaoh to let Israel go and then as a bonus, God parted the Red Sea saving Israel from Pharaoh’s army.

This generation of Israelites [those who came out of Egypt] saw more miracles than any generation who has ever lived and that would include the disciples. These Israelites saw a miracle per day for 40 years. You would think this would make them thankful but in spite of all God’s goodness toward them they became ungrateful and unhappy.

Ingratitude is a bad attitude that chips away at our joy. Like rain on loose soil, our spirit of gratitude slowly erodes until we become obstinate and ungrateful. Ingratitude is such a subtle sin: first we take God’s daily provisions for granted, then we become dissatisfied with what we have and begin to crave more. In the final stage we become demanding. It is never wise to make demands to God.

The remedy for ingratitude is to repent and begin thanking God for what He has already done. As the hymn writer stated it, “Count your many blessings, name them one by one. Count your many blessing and you will see what God has done.” When did you last count your blessings?

Independence toward God has in it the seed of real tragedy. Be dependence upon Him has in it the possibility of real independence.

~Clovis Chappell

my thoughts red

God could have lead the Israelites up the coast through Philistia which would have been a 10-14 day trip but He intentionally lead them into the wilderness. He wanted to separate them from the world and unto Himself for a time of instruction, training and worship. He wanted to teach them to live by faith so He carried them to a place where He was the only means of survival. Of course He came through with water from the Rock and Manna from heaven. His purpose was to teach them to be totally dependent upon Him. True independence comes when we learn to be totally dependent upon Christ our Savior and Lord. In Egypt [A type of the world] the Israelites were slaves but by rebelling against God they slipped back into a slavery of a different sort; they became slaves to sin. Eventually it cost them their freedom and their land.

I’m just honestly ready for all this to be over. I don’t understand why this is happening but it is. I don’t believe I am being punished by God for anything I’ve done; He just sees it in my best interest and his glory for me to go through this, as hard as it may be. People keep telling me I am strong, but I can guarantee you I’m not. I am so weak, but my God is strong. I can’t focus on the WHY bc that won’t get me anywhere; I have to focus on the WHO and the HOPE, which is Jesus Christ. He is literally the only thing getting me through this. I pray God’s light shines through me as much as possible for his glory in the end. It’s not about me.”

SCRIPTURE

One day the apostles said to the LORD, “We need more faith; tell us how to get it.”

~Luke 17:5, NLT

QUOTE

Faith is a living, daring confidence in God’s grace, so sure and certain that a man could stake his life on it a thousand times.

~Martin Luther

my thoughts red

Unless I am missing something, Jesus did not give them a direct answer and He did not confer faith upon them. He did tell them they could do incredible things with small faith. We would all like to have more faith if the LORD would just give it to us but He doesn’t work in this way. Faith is like a muscle, if you want it to become stronger, you have to exercise it. Who wants to work out? We prefer a gift to a workout. Some things God refuses to make easy for our benefit.

I love the story of the Red Sea.  When the Israelites saw the Egyptian army approaching, they panicked. They cried out to the Lord,  and they said to Moses, “Why did you bring us out here to die in the wilderness? Weren’t there enough graves for us in Egypt? What have you done to us? Why did you make us leave Egypt?… But Moses told the people, “Don’t be afraid. Just stand still and watch the Lord rescue you today. The Egyptians you see today will never be seen again. The Lord himself will fight for you. Just stay calm.”

Evidently both Moses and the Israelites continued to cry out to God in prayer because God said to Moses,  “Why are you crying out to me? Tell the people to get moving!” Dr. Vance Havner paraphrase went like this, “This is no time for a prayer meeting, tell the people to get moving.” There is a time to pray and a time to go forward in faith. I believe God wants us to get our feet wet. Don’t wait until you see the sea parting to move: step into the water and trust Him to make a way.

Choices are the hinges of destiny.

~Edwin Markham

my thoughts red

We got a Zenith black and white console TV when I was 11 years old; which would be 1960. We could get one channel clearly: channel 23 out of Decatur and I think it was NBC, not sure. In 1963 Channel 19 {CBS} came on the air out of Huntsville. WAFF 48 came on air in 1954 and WAAY in 1959 but I do not remember getting those stations. I think their signal strength was too weak for our area. I left Athens in 1971 and at that time my folks could get four networks: NBC, ABC, CBS and Public or Educational TV. Today, we can get hundreds of stations. It would take you an hour just to scroll through all the channels. Modern technology has increased our choices. When I was a kid, ice cream came in vanilla, chocolate and strawberry: today they have hundreds of flavors to choose from.

Do more choices make life easier or more difficult? The more options we have, the harder it is to make a choice. God knew this was true so He gave Israel two choices and He gives you and I two choices. Our choice is either life or death, heaven or hell, obedience to Christ or rejection of Christ. We call an easy choice a “No Brainer” but for some reason, millions choose death over life and their will over God’s will.

Thus the Israelites left Egypt like an army ready for battle.

Do you believe in miracles?

~Al Michaels [1980 Winter Olympics]

my thoughts red

The Soviet Union won the Olympic Hockey championship from 1954 to 1980. They were all professional soldiers/hockey players. They practiced 365 days a year but were on the army payroll which of course made them illegal because in those days Olympians were supposed to be amateurs {O for the good old days}. In 1979 the Soviet team beat the NHL all stars. The 1980 US Hockey teams was made up of college kids in their teens and twenties. No one gave them a chance.

There is a greater miracle recorded in the Old Testament. Moses lead 2,000,000 plus Israelites through a wilderness that is hard on rattle snakes. I want you to get a picture of this in your mind. Marching in columns with 50 per row, the Israelites were spread over 25 miles. If you had put them in box cars, it would have taken 200 trains all pulling 100 cars. To top that, God forced them to spend 40 years in the wilderness due to their disobedience and during that time, they ate 9 billion gallons of manna. No one died from the trip. No one died of starvation or heat exhaustion: they died from disobedience, otherwise Moses would have lead this horde through a snake infested wilderness into a land of promise. Miracles happen all the time, we simply don’t recognize them. No one in history; no one living today can explain how Moses and the Israelites survived other than giving God the glory for a miracle.
