Our Time of Need

April 8, 2016

Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.

~Hebrews 4:16, NIV

No trial is too great, no temptation is too strong, but that Jesus Christ can give us the mercy and grace we need, when we need it.

~Warren W. Wiersbe

Moses did not lead the Israelites into the Promise Land [rest], matter of fact, Moses did not enter himself. Joshua lead Israel into their physical rest [Promise Land] but not into the ultimate spiritual rest. Aaron, the first high priest and all his descendants were unable to lead Israel into this “Spiritual Rest.” Jesus Christ, the Son of God, is the ‘Rest’ referred to in Deuteronomy 12:9,10, Joshua 1:13 and Psalms 95:11. The Promise Land was only a shadow of the reality that would come in Jesus.

Aaron and his sons offered thousands of sacrifices but the blood of bulls and goats could not take away our sins. These sacrifices reminded us of our sin but they did not remove our guilt–they simply foreshadowed better things to come. Therefore, when Christ came into the world, He said:

“You did not want animal sacrifices or sin offerings. But you have given Me a body to offer. You were not pleased with burnt offerings or other offerings for sin.”

Then Jesus said:

“Look, I have come to do Your will, O God—as is written about Me in the Scriptures.”

In light of what Christ has done in our behalf– Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need. {Hebrews 4:16, NLT}

Four things we need:

  1. Confidence: {parrēsia} freedom to speak openly, frankly, without fear or concealment.
  2. Mercy: {eleos} kindness or good will towards the miserable and the afflicted, joined with a desire to help them.
  3. Grace: {charis} that which affords joy, pleasure, delight, sweetness, charm, and loveliness. God’s undeserved loving kindness and favor.
  4. Help: {boētheia} under-girding. Used twice in NT. Here an Acts 27:17. Refers to the cables or ropes that sailors used to bind or under-gird the hull of the ship to keep it from breaking up.

Jesus, as our Faithful and Sympathetic High Priest can give us all four things.

  • Day two of Phase-One went well and God has answered a prayer concerning Phase-Two. With Hope in mind, use the four points above to pray specifically for her.
  • We got some bad news from Athens yesterday: my sister Joy’s former son-in-law was killed in a 4-wheeler accident. He was around the age of 45 and had two sons which, of course, are my sister’s grand sons.
  • I have a wedding Saturday and for the first time in my life, I am excited in a positive way about a wedding. They called yesterday telling me  it was an Alabama wedding and to wear jeans and an Alabama shirt. Instead of pronouncing them man and wife, I am to say ROLL TIDE. Just kidding on that last part.
  • Sunday Schedule: Deacon’s meeting @ 8:15, LCBS @ 9:15, Worship @ 10:15, Business Meeting @ 11:00, AWANA @ 5:30, Visitation @ 5:30 and worship @ 6:15.
  • Franklin Graham Prayer Rally this coming Thursday, April 14. I think Joe David said we could leave the church at 9:30 am.

“I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid.

~John 14:27, NLT

When the power of His love overcomes your love of power, you can have peace.

I have had a good week but an unusual week: for the last two nights, I have preached from my morning bible study. I the only sermon I intended to preach was Sunday morning and I have my doubts about it. In my bible study yesterday morning, I discovered four things in John 14 that the world can not give you.

  1. A HOPE FOR THE FUTURE: [14:1-4] We believers have a future and Jesus talks about it in the first four verses. No matter how bad things get here, this is not our home. The good news is: we are just passing through. Let not your heart be troubled, heaven is our home.
  2. A PERFECT SENSE OF SATISFACTION. [14:8] It doesn’t matter who you are or how much you have, you are not perfectly happy and you are most certainly not perfectly fulfilled. This is true because this world is not our home. Christ fills the void but the consummation of the filling comes with His return. “No eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no mind has imagined what God has prepared for those who love him.” [I Cor. 2:9]
  3. A PERFECT FRIEND WHO CAN STAND WITH US IN ANY SITUATION. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate {Helper, Intercessor, Friend, Standby}, who will never leave you. [14:16] I will not abandon you as orphans—I will come to you. [14:18]
  4. PEACE OF MIND AND HEART: [14:27] Do you not covet peace of mind and heart. The peace Jesus gives the world cannot take away so don’t be troubled or afraid {these are not my words}.

I have to be honest, my heart is often troubled; I don’t understand what is happening. Can you explain to me why a 15 year old is fighting for his life while a 66 year old who definitely deserved death and hell is still walking around? Why is it that the best among us seem to suffer the most? I don’t know the answers and Jesus has no obligation to explain His infinite plans to me and even if He did, I would not be able to understand. I do very much believe in heaven: without John 14:1-4 nothing would make sense.

  • Another good REVIVAL SERVICE: God is good.
  • Gary is still very weak and Kane is now in ICU. We need to pray fervently for these two guys and their families. You can text me anytime and I will pray with you. All you have to do is send me the praying hands or just say, “I am praying for Kane and Gary,” and I will send you a voice mail or a text. We had almost 40 to respond the last time and we’ve had only 8 this time but I know other groups are doing prayer chains and the more the better.
  • Lifting Kane in Prayer meeting: Joe David said they had around 70. I don’t have any other details. I hope we have more good news for you tomorrow.
  • We need some good news and Judy Davis got some this week: Judy has been under the anxiety of her cancer returning but growth was benign Praise the LORD.
  • More good news: Jack Nicholson is pro-life….check it outJack is Pro-life for good reason

“The Lord is my helper, I will not be afraid.
What will man do to me?”

~Hebrews 13:6, NLT

It is impossible for that man to despair who remembers that his Helper is omnipotent.

~Jeremy Taylor

my thoughts red

A couple was making plans to build a house but the man was hit with a brain tumor. He was a gracious Christian who never complained. To the day of his departure, he had an unbelievable spirit. His widow decided to go through with the plans but she knew nothing about building a house so she called a fine Christian man who is a retired builder: He is helping her build the house, something she could never do on her own. Even from the secular point of view, there are times when we need help and it is a blessing to have good friends that are there to help us. Jesus gives us 24/7 road assistance. He told His disciples, “I will not abandon you like orphansI will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever; that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you and will be in you. This magnificent helper is the HOLY SPIRIT, the mysterious One who moves like the wind. We cannot see HIM but we can see the evidence of HIS presence. I saw Him moving last night. Thank You father for our helper.

  • In preparation for our REVIVAL we are going to do 24 days of prayer–praying all 24 hours of the day. This begins October 9th and goes through November 1st. You can sign up in the foyer. We need at least 24 intercessors: 48 would be even better.
  • SEE YOU AT THE POLE in the morning at Elementary…7:20 am.
  • SENIOR ADULT Tailgate Party Friday, 11:30. Seniors, your option is Potato Salad or a dessert. We are grilling BBQ Ribs and Chicken.
  • Mission to the Park….Saturday…Leave DBC at 7:30 am.
  • Today we pray for the WORLD…according to Paul in Romans 11, the Jews are coming back to God which means coming to Christ. We are talking one great REVIVAL. Let’s pray for Jews to turn to Jesus. We need them folks. If we could get them fired up, they could help us get the gospel to the world in a hurry. Read Romans 11 in the Message: it will bless you.
  • Congratulations to John and Cindy on the birth of their grandchild…Erin had a little girl last night. I intended to be there but I had a little accident and didn’t get to go any where.

A woman goes to the Doctor, worried about her husband’s temper. The Doctor asks: “What’s the problem? The woman says: “Doctor, I don’t know what to do. Every day my husband seems to lose his temper for no reason. It scares me.” The Doctor says: “I have a cure for that. When it seems that your husband is getting angry, just take a glass  of water and start swishing it in your mouth. Just swish and swish but don’t swallow it until he either leaves the room or calms down.” Two weeks later the woman comes back to the doctor looking fresh and reborn. The woman says: “Doctor that was a brilliant idea! Every time my husband started losing it, I swished with water. I swished and swished, and he calmed right down! How does a glass of water do that?” The Doctor says: “It is not the water. It’s the fact that you have to keep your mouth shut while swishing the water…that’s what does the trick…”

Jesus replied with a story: “A Jewish man was traveling from Jerusalem down to Jericho, and he was attacked by bandits. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him up, and left him half dead beside the road.

~Luke 10:30, NLT

The consequences of unwise choices or actions of hurtful people can create burdens or wounds that endure for a lifetime.

~Bill Crowder

my thoughts red

When a subject comes up two days in a row, I assume God is trying to tell me something. I dealt with forgiveness in the message on Wednesday night and then it came up again Thursday morning. The LORD dealt with me before the sermon concerning my slowness to forgive. A part of forgiveness is letting go but I have struggled with letting go of some things that happened a long, long time ago. When I read Bill Crowder’s Our Daily Bread devotion yesterday, it stirred my mind and moved my heart. I decided to share some of my thoughts with you.

Jesus taught us in the story of the Good Samaritan that there are four kinds of people in the world: [1] Those who get hurt [man beaten by the robbers, Victims]. [2] Those who hurt others intentionally and without cause [robbers, the Vicious] [3] Those who are indifferent, those who could help but don’t care [Priest and Levite, the Vain] [4] Those who help and speed the process of healing [Good Samaritan, the Virtuous]. So whether your hurt involves divorce, abuse, drugs, abandonment, rejection, scorn or whatever: people do get hurt others, this is a fact of life. Sometimes the hurt is so bad that a Good Samaritan is needed. Had he not come along when he did, the man in the ditch would have died.

Sometimes this healing agent can be a spouse who loves unconditionally. Sometimes it can be a grandchild as in the case of Naomi. It could be a bible study group, a Sunday School class, a friend, a co-worker or a Christian counselor but pretending you’re not hurt is no solution and healing is a process that takes time.

EXTRA animated

I know you don’t like long blogs but this is for the hurting. If you are not hurting, do not read this section. If you are, let me give you some advice. It can be very embarrassing to admit that you have been hurt; especially if it happened during your childhood and by someone you trusted.  The rule of thumb is: [1] You’re healing depends on your honesty. The depth of your healing will go no deeper than the depth of your honesty. No, I do not recommend  you come to me or any preacher. I recommend a professional Christian counselor. I would be more than happy to help you find one. The number one reason for this is confidentially which you need for your protection. You may have a friend you can trust but be careful. Whether you were abused sexually, had an abortion, suffered a painful rejection or heartbreaking disappointment; you have to deal with what really happened or you will never recover. [2] There is no disgrace in being hurt or needing help. The man in the story [Luke 10] did nothing to deserve being robbed, stripped, and beaten. He was hurt so badly that he could not help himself. We all need help from time to time. If you want healing, don’t be afraid to get help. [3] Concentrate on your healing not justice for the robbers [brutal people who inflict hurt]. Turn the robbers over to the proper authorities. If someone robs me, I am not going to get my 12 gauge and go after them, this is not my job. I will allow he proper authorities to deal with them. Do not take the law into your own hands and try to make them pay. Most robbers [hurtful people] are never converted and they never change. They may never be sorry for what they did to you. The truth is: most offenders do not care that they hurt you. They don’t even think about you. You were just a bump in the road. Hurtful people move on to new relationships: they don’t pine over the human debris they leave behind. Forget them and focus on your healing. Healing involves honesty about the hurt and disengagement from those who did the hurting. You cannot forget the hurt but do your best to forget them. Turn them over to the proper authorities and walk away. Trust me, in the end, you will feel sorry for them. God’s mill rocks of justice turn exceeding slow but they grind exceeding fine.  The most liberating day of your life will be when you give HIM your hurts.

For the record, the above was written in the early hours of May 15th, long before the day unfolded.

  • Seth graduates from lineman school this morning at 9:00 and Jeremy graduates PTA school tonight. It is a big day for the Bailey’s.
  • Chloe Bug is back home, her mother is to arrive [God willing] in the early hours of the morning. It has been a week. I pretty much let her do whatever and I have created a beast. She has exhausted me this week. She has the energy of a Turrentine. She is a little machine and she has learned to climb and is not afraid of heights. I know why God does not allow older women to get pregnant: we older men couldn’t take raising a little one. I don’t know how Sarah and Abraham did it, that is raise a child.
  • Visitation for the Maddox Family tonight at Peck 6:00-8:00: COLS tomorrow [Saturday] at Peck [11:00 am].
  • Full lineup for Sunday: Deacon’s meeting at 8:00, LCBS 9:00, Worship Celebration at 10:15, WEE Care Graduation at 2:00 and AWANA graduation at 6:00 followed by Pizza Fellowship.

We are all born helpless.

~C.S. Lewis

Blog strip

I suppose we all strive for some degree of independence, it is our human nature but not only were we born helpless, many times we return to state of helplessness before we depart this world. A man is a fool to deny his need for help: we all need help and we all need to be helpers. Psalm 121 was my Mother’s favorite Psalm. It is what they call a Psalm of ascent. It’s a song the pilgrims sang as they neared the summit of Zion. To the ancient Jews, the mountains were a symbol of worship, refuge and strength.  Mountains are majestic master pieces of God’s creative power but the mountains are not our source of help. Our help comes from the Maker of the mountains.

  • Dick and Laura wanted me to express thanks to the church for use of the facilities and for all the help: I know that Holly called on several of you to help with the food. Carrie Beth and Brett, Will and Chanda and Tracey Hill worked the entire visitation. A special thanks to Terry Cowart who ran the sound and stayed at the church all evening until all the flowers were picked up and he also stayed for the evening service and ran the sound. A very special thanks to Joe Fitzgerald and Rickey Fields for working through the LCBS hour to get our bathroom working. Last but not least I must thank all of those who are in His Majesty’s Secret Service [that would be my prayer warriors]. Thank you guys!
  • I was totally shocked when I walked in last night: I expected 20 and we had three times that many. I was blown away. I apologize to the kids but we didn’t think we would have any and we ended up with a dozen. Big Mama didn’t bring the candy. We will make up for it next week.
  • More good news: Our offering for the Dana Segars memorial was $1,372.00. That will buy 130 bibles. I was thrilled and so were Jimmy and Sandra. Way to go DBC.
  • LORD willing, the entire Bailey bunch will leave for a retreat in Gatlinburg, Tennessee sometime March 24.
  • The woman on the left [below] is Tinkerbelle, she is Len Cox boss. She told me that when she says “jump,” Len says, “how high?” She is also Rebecca’s Stephenson’s mother. Rebecca was Clayton’s fiancé.

SCRIPTURE: If you don’t help me, I will be torn apart like an animal caught by a lion. I will be carried away with no one to save me. {Psalms 7:2, ERV}

QUOTE: Life without Christ is a hopeless end–Life with Christ is an endless hope. ~Herbert Vander Lugt

COMMENTARY: This is a Psalm of David. He is crying out to the LORD for help. David said, “LORD, if you don’t help me, I will be torn apart like an animal caught by a lion.” How would you fill in the blank? LORD, if you don’t help me_________________. LORD if you don’t help me, my ship is sunk…my goose is cooked…I am dead in the water. You get the idea, we are in desperate need of the LORD’s intervention.

EXTRA: Joe David leaves for El Salvador today. He is helping Teddy with a pastor’s conference. Gerry Cole is having a procedure on her eye today in Birmingham. It will be out-patient and she has to go back Wednesday for the second phase. Margaret Prater has surgery tomorrow at Decatur General. One month from today, we get to see Seth.

EXTRA:EXTRA: This year December has 5 Saturdays, 5 Sundays and 5 Mondays. This only happens every 824 years. In just a few days we will be at 12/12/12. This has happened once a month for 12 years but will not happen again until 2101. Chloe may be here but she would be 88.
