Scripture

Israel, you have forgotten the God who rescued you and protects you like a mighty rock.

~Isaiah 17:10, GNT

Quote

Some things are not worth remembering while other things must not be forgotten.

~Ya’akov

Isaiah said in chapter one, “Even an ox knows its owner, and a donkey recognizes his master’s care–but Israel doesn’t know its master and they don’t recognize the one who gives them care.” God has been especially good to the sons of Israel. He redeemed them from bondage in Egypt, He lead them for 40 years in the wilderness: if ever a country was blessed by God, it was Israel. Unfortunately, the Israelites were dumber than an ox; even a Jackass had more sense than the ungrateful Israelites.

I’m a student of the American revolution. Our founding fathers were viewed as traitors by the Crown. The English would not recognize the continental army as a viable force and mocked George Washington our commander-in-chief. They were simply referred to as ‘rebels.’ No one thought the colonies had a chance, not even a slim chance of gaining their independence. The English probably underestimated the resolve of the Patriots but the greatest factor in the war was divine providence. Even Washington knew that we were not supposed to win.

Like Israel, we are a nation born out of divine providence and like Israel, we have forgotten the God who rescued us from the tyranny of king George and has protected us these 240 years by His grace and mercy. My generation has witness a moral decline that is mind boggling. First, there was Roe V. Wade and the conspiracy of the Supreme Court to rob the unborn of their rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. A decade later, the gays came out of the closet and began marching down main street with the approval of media and politicians. Then came the barbaric practice of partial birth abortion. Now we have the trans-gender movement, gay marriage and the mass immigration of Muslims. I never dreamed that we would be discussing these things in my life time.

We are still singing God Bless America but we have no intention of Blessing the God who made this country great. One day, we will repent with bitter tears but by then, America, the Great Republic and bastion of freedom, will be a memory.

SCRIPTURE

In any case, it was kind of you to share my distress.

~Philippians 4:14, NRSV

QUOTE

Let your heart feel for the afflictions and distress of everyone, and let your hand give in proportion to your purse.

~George Washington

my thoughts red

Philippians 4 is a wonderful chapter, one of my favorite in all the word of God. In this great chapter Paul says…

  • Rejoice in the LORD always and again I say rejoice.
  • Don’t worry about anything but pray about everything.
  • Think on things worthy of praise and the peace of God will be in you.
  • I have learned to be content in any and all circumstances.
  • I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

Wow, what a fantastic list of exhortations. After saying all these wonderful things, Paul says, “In any case, it is kind of you to share in my distress.” The word distress is the Greek word ‘thlipsis’. It is one of the few Greek words that I recognize. It is the word used for pressing the juice out of the grapes. It literally means under pressure and is translated tribulation, oppression and distress. I like the NRSV translation here as distress. Distress is suffering that affects the mind or body due to a difficult situation in which you do not have enough money, food, energy or resources. It just so happened that the Philippians revived Paul’s depleted bank account. They shared his distress.

Even the Apostle Paul with his tremendous faith in Jesus felt distress at times. The same man who exhorts us not to worry about anything also felt the pressures of daily living and welcomed the relief that came to him in an act of kindness from the Philippian Church.

Do you feel the pressure? Jesus uses this same word ‘thlipsis’ in John 16:33, “These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation {thlipsis}; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.”

  • Today we pray for School Teachers: it is their first day back after the CHRISTMAS BREAK. The only bad thing about the CHRISTMAS BREAK, it doesn’t last long.
  • My Nephew Henry Eugene Bailey  was promoted yesterday morning [Jan. 5] around 7:00 am. Henry would have been 53 this February 22. Henry was born in Dennison, Texas while his Dad was in the Air Force. I have a good story about our first trip to see Henry. I’ll put it on My Stories. His COLS is tomorrow {Wednesday} at Sardis Springs at 1:00. Henry’s frail body will be buried on the land that was a part of our family farm when I was a boy. His battle with a very mean and vicious enemy {cancer} is over. Henry has VICTORY IN JESUS forever!
  • We got all the CHRISTMAS decorations down and stored. It will not be long until Lexi unplugs my last outside tree. I don’t want my neighbors out doing me but Lexi usually takes care of it. They leave their lights up to the middle of January but Lexi is having no part of that. We also got the JANUARY 2015 DIGEST to Alabama Mail and we went to see Kenny. He was not having a good day and I did not get to talk with him. He has a doctor’s appointment Wednesday. Pray for Kenny. Stop reading and pray for him now.
  • It is official: June and I {Lord willing} will be going to Grand Bay January 17-22. This includes two travel days. We will be working with Bro. Teddie in REVIVAL. I pray that 2015 will be the year of Revival in America and I would love to see it break out in Grand Bay and spread all across the USA. We also go to Sardis Springs February 15-18 for the Winter Bible Study. God is good!
  • First day of diet went pretty good: I switched to Atkins when I got home and ate a pound of meatloaf but no bread or carbs. We had black bean burritos for lunch and it was good. Black beans, spinach, brown rice, yogurt and salsa, 280 calories. There is no way I could have taken in more than 1500 calories today but I still feel fat.
  • Big Mama says we have 60 hours of sub-freezing temperatures coming this week.

SCRIPTURE

“Do not lie. Do not deceive one another.”

~Leviticus 9:11, NIV

QUOTE

I consider the most enviable of all titles, the character of an honest man.

~George Washington

THOUGHT

George Washington’s deepest core value was integrity. He wanted to be and to be remembered as an honest man. The George Washington types {honest men} are hard to find. Shakespeare believed you find only one in a thousand. We generally think of lying as words said but many a man has been deceived by what was not said, that should have been said. The word of God is clear, we are not to deceive others by either bad information of withholding information. Every man should speak truth to his neighbor. People who are driven by a single motive are more apt to be honest where as people who have divided loyalties are much more prone to duplicity and deception. God is not going to hold the dupe responsible for your cunning deception. It is a mistake to let someone deceive you but no where in scripture is it identified as a sin. It is most definitely a sin to deceive in any fashion.

  • BLOCK PARTY is a go…Offering was $4,483.00 which gives us a grand total of $10,375.21 with three more offering to go. This a couple of thousand more than we had last year. I am excited because the LORD has given us a clear indication in terms of direction. As always, we are going to try to make the party better and more evangelistic. We have most of the stage personalities lined up but we have a couple of additional things we are working on. Budget offering was good and attendance better but not great.
  • Good service last night and great offering…Way to go DBC, I commend you on your generosity.
  • Work night this Wednesday: we are going to do some work in the FORTE. One crew will work on the ramp, some will be painting and some cleaning. Plenty of work for anyone who wants to help: we start at 6:30. No service in the Sanctuary: everyone is invited to work.

COMMENTARY

John_FranklinSir John Franklin was a British Naval Officer who had led two successful Arctic explorations and was commissioned to led a third. Their goal was to chart the Northwest passage just above Canada. It would give Western Europe a shorter route to the Pacific. Sir John and crew left England in May of 1845 and stopped for more men and supplies in Greenland in July. The ships were last seen leaving Greenland. There ships became ice-bound in the Victoria Straight near King Williams Island. No one knows the details but all 128 men perished. Some critics say that Franklin did not make ample preparation for the Arctic. His crew was not outfitted with heavy clothing. They wore standard sailing apparel which is not suitable for the Arctic. The ships were loading with silverware and fine china. It was almost as though they were on a pleasure cruise. Most of what they had on board was useless once they got stuck in the ice. Sir John did not count the cost. He did not make ample preparation. He had been there twice before; experience alone should have told him to prepare.

What is it about men that causes us to procrastinate when it comes to preparing for the inevitable. William Nelson was a Yankee General in the war of Northern aggression. He had been in the middle of untold battles and survived. While enjoying some down time with his men and liquor, he was accidentally killed in a bar brawl. He was shot in the chest and he knew his time here on earth was very short. His last command was to get the Chaplain. The General was not prepared to die. Even the creatures of the wild have enough sense to prepare for the inevitable.

SCRIPTURE:  For this reason God gave them over to degrading passions; for their women exchanged the natural function for that which is unnatural, and in the same way also the men abandoned the natural function of the woman and burned in their desire toward one another, men with men committing indecent acts and receiving in their own persons the due penalty of their error. {Romans 1:26-27, NASB}

QUOTE: The claim to equality, outside the strictly political field, is made only by those who feel themselves to be in some way inferior. ~Screwtape {Screwtape Proposes a Toast by C.S. Lewis}

COMMENTARY: The liberal quest for equality and political correctness may well be our demise. People should be treated fairly but there is no such thing as human equality. Some men are stronger than others and some are more intelligent. When we clamor for rights, we reveal our inferiority. A beautiful woman does say to an unattractive woman, “Hey, I am prettier than you.”  A genius does not say to a dunce “I am more intelligent than you.” Thomas Jefferson would not walk up to Bill Clinton and say, “You know what Slick, you are inferror to me.” The obvious does not need to be stated. The same is true in the moral realm: some people are better than others. We are all sinners and all in need of grace but some men display courage, nobility and honor. I think General George Washington would be a great example of those virtues. On the other hand, all men are not noble or courageous; some are cowards, liars and thieves. Should we treat the criminal the same way we do the virtuous man? If that be the case, why do we have prisons? The scripture teaches that homosexuality is a perversion. There is not one verse in the bible that condones homosexuality. Robert Jeffress, Pastor of First Baptist Dallas has not uttered a word of hate speech. He simply stated the truth that homosexuals prey on little boys and that is the primary reason the BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA will not allow homosexuals into their ranks. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to understand that such indecent behavior will destroy not only the body but the soul and the mind.

robert-jeffress-05213Perhaps I don’t have all the evidence but in the videos I viewed: Pastor Jeffress was biblically correct and very kind. I saw no hate or malice; certainly nothing compared to Jeremiah Wright. I like Tim Tebow and I am still a fan but I think he caved on this one. The sad thing is that our POLITICALLY CORRECT CRAZED CULTURE lead by the lame stream left-wing media forced Tim to make a choice between his conviction and his desire to play professional football. Had he not yielded to the incredible pressure: they would have destroyed him. The real disturbing thing is that SPORTS TALK SHOW host and former athletes have piled on. I have not heard one Sports Analyst defend Pastor Jeffress including some that I have heard speak of their love for Christ. Like Tebow, they felt the pressure and they caved. When a culture idolizes a pedafile like Michael Jackson and on the other hand persecutes [dog the steps] a kid like Tebow, it does that say much for the culture. We know the truth but we lack the courage to speak it. We are not going to hear it from the media and may the LORD have mercy on us if we don’t hear it from the pulpit.

Let's Pray For Tim: He is under a lot of pressure.

Let’s Pray For Tim: He is under a lot of pressure.

EXTRA: The kids have given me a smart phone; the only problem is that I am not smart enough to use. I will try to keep you updated on TWITTER concerning our folks in crisis as soon as I get word. I think that there is a possiblity that Michelle might get moved today. Note: that is a possibility, it is not cut and dried so keep praying. Wanda Yarbrough [Cindy’s Mom] was much better yesterday morning and Janette Turner [Darlene’s Mom] was still critical. Troy MacAbee’s Mom who was in a single car accident will have to wear a back brace but no surgery required at this point. For those of you who read the Extra but not the blog…Please watch the Ben Carson speech at the National Prayer Breakfast and share it with as many as possible.

The Chaldeans Are Coming

February 2, 2013

MyHope coming November 2013

SCRIPTURE: This is the word of the Eternal, the God of Israel…The Chaldeans are coming. [Jeremiah 33:4a-5a, Moffatt]

QUOTE: Malo periculosam, libertatem quam quietam servitutem. ~Thomas Jefferson [I prefer the tumult of liberty to the quiet of servitude]

COMMENTARY: Jeremiah was confined to the guard-house [jail] when this message came to him. The title of the message is “The Chaldeans Are Coming.” No one wanted to hear Jeremiah’s message because it contained no good news. Jeremiah said the Chaldeans are coming and when they arrive, they will [1] kill [2] destroy [3] and enslave. No one wanted Jeremiah to be right including Jeremiah but he was right…his message was from God and the Chaldeans came. They filled Jerusalem with dead bodies, they destroyed the temple and all the palaces and those who survived were enslaved.

I don’t see a lot difference between the Chaldeans and the democrats. They are killing the unborn. They are destroying every vestige of God. They don’t want Him in the Pledge of Allegiance, in the class room, court room, court-house or on the public square. They hate the name of Jesus unless it is used profanely. If they could, they would do away with Christmas just as Hitler did in Germany. These pagans worship political correctness and are doing their best to force it on those of us who cherish our freedom to speak the truth. The only sin of the far left is to call sin a sin. Perversion is no longer queer, its gay. Drunks are now alcoholics–it is a sickness not a sin. It’s the only sickness I know that comes in a bottle or can. These modern day Chaldeans speak of slavery with disdain, frowning on Washington and Jefferson and yet they are enslaving an entire culture even as they speak. Economic slavery may be more dangerous than the slavery practiced by our forefathers. At least those slaves knew they were slaves. The dupes today who bow at the feet of big government don’t even realize they are enslaved. They are right where the democrats want them: totally dependent on government.

Like Jefferson, I prefer dangerous freedom over the peaceful slavery. If you created a composit brain from all the politicians in Washington, it would be still be inferior to Jefferson’s.

EXTRA: Darlene’s mom was much better as of last night but Michelle was not feeling well. I want you to keep praying for Michelle and her family. They are in a storm that most of us have never faced. Robert Pope is feeling much better after his shoulder surgery. I think I might have said knee yesterday but it was shoulder. My brother in Athens is better but he wants us to continue to pray. We had a good turn out for our Senior Adult Fellowship. I thought we would be down but I was wrong.

Keep The Fire Going

December 2, 2012

christmas-strip-fire-place4

SCRIPTURE: The fire on the altar shall be kept burning; it shall not go out. [Leviticus 6:12, NRSV]

QUOTE: A man is a failure only when he quits and I will not quit. ~George Washington

COMMENTARY: The bronze altar was outside the holy place but inside the outer curtain. It was the place where all offering except incense were made. There were morning and evening sacrifices everyday plus those brought by the people during the day. Except in times when Israel was in a backsliden condition, the altar was a busy place. The priest were commanded by Moses to keep the altar fire going, even through the dark hours of the night. The fire was a symbol of God’s consuming and holy presence. When the offerings were placed on the altar, the fire consumed the sacrifice and converted it into smoke and ashes. The smoke went up as an offering to God. The ashes stayed here on earth.  One thing is sure, there is no going up [ascending] without sacrifice and there is no sacrifice without fire. Fire was vital for Hebrew worship. Of course you understand the fire that Jesus brought was of a different sort. Jesus said, “I have come to set the world on fire, and I wish it were already burning!” John the Baptist said, I baptize with water those who repent of their sins and turn to God. But someone is coming soon who is greater than I am—so much greater that I’m not worthy even to be his slave and carry his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. The fire could be our passion, zeal, love, ardor: I’m not sure. John associated it with the Holy Spirit but did not indicate that they were one in the same. One thing is certain, we are not to let the fire go out. How do you keep a fire going? How do you keep your love for Jesus hot? I would say: [1] Stay in the word [2] Stay in the fellowship and service of the church. [4] Stay on your knees. [5]  Stay focused by sharing your faith. When we refer to a person being on fire for Jesus, it is usually related to personal evangelism.

EXTRA: I did not watch the game live and I’m glad. I caught the last 2 minutes at Hannah’s. Watched the replay this morning around 2:00 am. I don’t know folks–Notre Dame may be more than we can handle. We are making a lot of critical mistakes and don’t seem to be improving. Oh well, it is just a game. Georgia did beat Florida. They do have a very good team and Big Mama is a much better sport than I am. I know you did not know that so I thought I would tell you. LORD willing, Seth will get to see the National Championship game. He is to graduate January 4, 2013. and that is just 33 days from today. GUESS WHAT: Gregg was at the game! Someone gave him a ticket. Can you believe that? I think old Gregg did pretty good. [Inside joke]
