If Only I Had Wings

June 26, 2016

I wish I had wings like a dove, so I could fly far away and be at peace.

~Psalm 55:6, CEV

Some people live in a dream world while other face reality and a rare few learn to turn one into the other.

~Doug Everett

Escapism is the tendency to seek distraction and relief from unpleasant circumstances or realities. We may achieve this relief through entertainment, recreation, hard work, drugs or fantasy. Usually, when a person get addicted to drugs, it is an effort to escape an unpleasant reality. In David’s case, his life was threatened by a friend who betrayed him and David came so close to death that he was terrified. In that moment of fear and anxiety, David prayed, “I wish I had wings like a dove, so I could fly away and be at peace.”

Hey, there is nothing wrong with David’s desire for peace and security. Only a fool would pray to be on someone’s hit list. A powerful person had a contract on David’s life and he was feeling very insecure. He longed to be like a bird because they have a distinct advantage over their predators and over we humans; they have wings. In seconds a dove can escape danger by taking flight. They can fly above the fray and they leave no tracts for those who would hunt them. Have you ever saw a dove in a storm? Birds don’t do storms; instinctively they fly away from or above the storms. They are the ultimate escape artist.

So, David is wishing he could be like a bird and escape his problems by getting away from the storm and the turmoil. BUT we are not birds and God is not pleased when we run from our problems. Little children use fantasy as an escape valve and that is a God given survival instinct but a part of growing up is learning to face reality whether it is pleasant or not. By the way, there is one bird that doesn’t fly away to escape reality, it buries its head in the sand. Its the Ostrich and it is a stupid bird. [Job 39:13-18]

So, don’t make excuses and don’t be childish, immature or stupid–face your problems. It is not like you are alone, Jesus will help you. He is our courage and our peace.

Pray For MY HOPE

Pray For MY HOPE

I trust in the Lord, so why did you tell me to run and hide?
Why did you say, “Fly like a bird to your mountain?”

Psalm 11:1, ERV

Perspective makes all the difference in the world.

After David initial encounter with Saul’s rage, some of his friends advised him to flee to the mountains for refuge. David mildly rebukes his friends because he sees flight as an act of cowardice and David is no coward. He reminds his friends that the LORD is in his holy temple [heaven]. The Lord sits on his throne in heaven. He sees everything that happens. He watches people closely. The Lord examines those who are good and those who are wicked; He hates those who enjoy hurting others. David sees the sovereignty of God and he is fully convinced that God sees him in his circumstance. The sun is greater in mass than any mountain but it is possible for the mountain to block our view of the sun. It all depends on where we are standing. David took a step back so he could see the bigger picture and he saw God on His throne.

We may not be tempted to flee to the mountains but we are tempted to hide; to blend in to the worldly landscape and so avoid the reproach of Christ. I think the greatest temptation facing Christians in our culture is to become friends with the world and to allow them to press us into their mold.

When I walked in last night, I thought wow, there must be something going on that I don’t know about. I think there are 17 up front singing and some did not come up and four got there too late to sing. We had right at 25 children in the service last night and of course we always have a gang of youth. Vellene is having surgery today at DGH. We will be working on MY HOPE at the office. I am planning to host or work with others in hosting three MY HOPE parties, one on Thursday, Friday and then again on Sunday night. I need you to pray. Some of you did well the first of last week but you let up. You cannot let up! Pray is the key. Follow MY HOPE on Twitter. Do whatever you have to do to keep it in the forefront of your mind.
