Scripture

You love evil more than good, and lying more than speaking the truth.

~Psalms 52:3, NRSV

Quote

Integrity is being truthful with yourself; honesty is being truthful with others.

~Spencer Johnson

When you read Psalm 52:3, You love evil more than good, and lying more than speaking the truth,  what name comes to mind? For me, it was Bill {Slick Willy} Clinton. I was in a hotel outside of DC when the news broke about Monica Lewinsky. I think I was there for the Promise Keepers rally. Whoever was rooming with me, said, “Jack, you have to see this,” it was Clinton making his famous denial: “I am not in a sexual relationship with this woman.” I tried to find the clip on YouTube and I couldn’t. I did find several with the words, “I did not.” I would have bet the farm that he said, “I am not,” which would have been a subtle play on the tense of the verb. Be that as it may, you can see the video clips on YouTube of the denial and then the confession. Either way you look at it, Clinton lied. In fact Clinton lied so much that it became natural: it would have required a special effort on his part to tell the truth.

But there is a greater problem than a president lying and that would be the lack of integrity in the folks who elected him. It was a proven fact that the man was a liar but that did not deter voters from electing him and many of them professed to be Christians. Lying is not just a political problem, it is a cultural problem. We live in a culture that loves to point the finger at someone else. We had rather make an excuse for our irresponsible behavior as to learn from our mistakes. We are childish and immature. We make promises and don’t keep them. We make vows and then break them. We make debts and don’t pay them. We sin but never confess them. We are a nation of liars. Isaiah could have been talking about America in 59:14, “Justice is driven away and right cannot come near. Truth stumbles in the public square, and honesty finds no place there.”

  • I love the GATHERING, great music and fair preaching.
  • Today is our court day: say a prayer for us. We don’t expect any surprises but you never know. I don’t like courts or court houses but I must confess that everyone there has been very helpful.
  • Thank God for electricity and A/C: what a blessing!
  • Pray for Rebecca and David, they leave Friday for vacation. Rebecca doesn’t fly so they are driving to Miami and going on a seven day cruise. Tyler will be filling in the next two weeks.

So you cannot become my disciple without giving

Giving can be risky business. People who have to have guarantees before they give, do very little giving. How do we know that our Mission dollars are spent wisely, whether it be IMB, NAMB, CP, or to the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association? This has been the number one complaint of the BLOCK PARTY–“What are these people doing with the things we are giving away each year: how do we know they are being used wisely?”

The answer is: we don’t know how each penny is spent; it is practically impossible for us to know or to find out. God knows but we have no way of knowing that every dime is spent properly. Let me ask you a question: do you spend every dime properly? Have you bought things that you didn’t need but you wanted? What is the alternative to giving without risks? It would be not giving!

My grandmother on my Daddy’s side was a good woman, straight as an arrow in many ways. She lost her husband in her 30’s and she had five children from ages 2-16. She had to sub-divide the family farm and sell off parts in order to keep the home and a few acres. She was a hard worker and very energetic but she was not perfect: she had a couple of besetting sins. I only going to mention one, she despised the subject of tithing or giving from the pulpit. She told me every time she got the chance, “There is plenty in the bible for you to talk about without you begging for money.” She didn’t know it but she was making me more determined to do the right thing. If you don’t learn to give; it will hurt you not me.

If you don’t have the heart and the desire to give, any excuse will do.

While serving a church is my college days, I set a Lottie Moon goal and challenged the little church to give. One old fellow was very upset. His argument was and I quote: “We don’t know where this money is going. For all we know, it is going to the Viet Cong.” Are you kidding me? I told him the truth: “I don’t know where every penny is going but I can assure you that none is going to Viet Cong.” The FMB {now IMB} may have spent some money in North Viet Nam but if they did, it was to share the gospel. The old man said, “That money may being buying the very bullets that are killing our boys.”

I hadn’t encountered any one quite so ignorant lately but those who don’t want  to give are going to justify their greed with some kind of lame excuse. It is what it is!

  • This is “Go to your doctor week for me.” I will be {Lord Willing} at DMH this morning for stomach test; Dr. Ward on Thursday and Dr. Keith on Friday.
  • I had a good visit with Mavis Fitzgerald yesterday. She is feeling better after a rough Sunday.
  • Debbie Gilliland’s brother Bill is not doing well. They have moved him to Comfort Care. If I feel up to it, I am going to try to visit Bill today.
  • Just 53 days until the time changes and hopefully by then, we will have a warm day every now and them. If I read the chart right, from January 1-March 13 we will gain exactly one hour of daylight and the time change will give us another hour on the PM side.

Scripture

Then the Lord asked Moses, “Who makes a person’s mouth? Who decides whether people speak or do not speak, hear or do not hear, see or do not see? Is it not I, the Lord? Now go! I will be with you as you speak, and I will instruct you in what to say.”

~Exodus 4:11-12, NLT

Moses stepped forward to deliver the Israelites before God called him and before they were ready to be lead. Then he spent 40 years learning how to survive in the wilderness. Providentially, God lead him there but I don’t think Moses understood why. Then when God called him to go back and deliver the Children of Israel, Moses made one excuse after another…”The Israelites will not listen to me and neither will Pharaoh…besides, I am not worthy: remember, I killed a man…what if no one believes a word I say…I have a speech impediment…I am not the right person, get someone else.”

The LORD became angry with Moses, “You are the right man; I will give you a helper–besides if I can use an old bush and the stick in your hand, I can use a man with stammering lips. For all that you lack, I AM, now GO before I get really angry.” [JEV]

What is God calling you to do? What excuses are you making? Responsible people don’t make excuses, they make plans. Moses was content to sit on the bench but God wanted him back in the game. Are you a spectator or a participant? It’s time to Go!

  • Got some visiting to do today but stilling shooting for two baptisms this Sunday. Pray for Buford, he has not been feeling good but he wants to be baptized.
  • My friend Lynn Haynes in HH is a little better, a tree fell on him about 10 days ago. He is a good man and I am glad he is improving.
  • All the van children are taken care of for Christmas but if you want a child to sponsor, I think Mandy can get you one through the school. Talk to her Sunday or give her a call on Monday.
  • I love holidays but they go by too fast.
  • June, Holly and Chloe Bug went to Hartselle in old Whitey, the ford F-150, that I use for a work truck. Chloe’s seat has her up at window level and she rolled her little window down. It’s a rather small window but she could see people and wave. She was wishing everyone a happy Halloween. Holly told her repeatedly to wish them a Merry Christmas, but she continued to wish them a happy Halloween. She is two Holidays behind.

SCRIPTURE

Then the Lord said to Moses, “Why are you crying out to me? Tell the people to get moving!”

~Exodus 14:15, NLT

QUOTE

We cannot do what God does and God will not do what we can.

~Oswald Chambers

my-thoughts-red

A woman woke her husband in the middle of the night telling him that she was in labor and needed to get to the hospital. He grabbed her by the hand and said, “Honey, let’s pray.” She said, “I have a better idea, get your clothes on and get the car.” How do we know when to wait on the Lord patiently in prayer and when to act decisively in faith and obedience? Many people use prayer as an alibi for disobedience. I have asked professing believers to do things clearly commanded in the word or God and they say, “I’ll have to pray about that.” After 46 years, I know what this means, they aren’t going to do it. They lack the courage to be honest. Instead of saying, “I have no intention of helping you preacher,” they spiritualized their fear and rebellion by saying, “Let me pray about it.”

The LORD said to Moses, “This is no time for a prayer meeting, tell the Israelites to get going: I want to see some wet feet.”

Actually, there are several things you don’t need to pray about:

  • Tithing
  • Sharing your faith
  • Helping someone is need
  • Worship attendance
  • Loving our neighbor

The most hypocritical thing we can do is to ask God to do something that we are perfectly capable of doing. God will not honor our prayers when we refuse to be a part of the answer. Some circumstances call for fervent prayer while others demand prompt obedience. May the Lord give us the wisdom to know the difference.

That is what I believe,” He said. I agree!

The Power To Say No

But you must resist the devil and stay strong in your faith.

Flip WilsonWell before your time, there was black comedian named Flip Wilson who hosted a weekly TV comedy hour. He was most famous for playing the part of Geraldine Jones, a sassy liberated black woman with a boyfriend named killer. Geraldine was forever getting into trouble but she always had an excuse, the same excuse–“The devil made me do it.” I am afraid a lot of folks use this as an excuse but in reality the devil has no power over a believer. Christ via His grace has given you the power to say “NO!” We can resist the devil by staying strong in the faith.
The tendency to blame others and make excuses is common to man. Remember Adam’s excuse in the garden, “It was the woman You put here with me,” the man said. “She gave me some of the fruit, and I ate it.” Remember Moses scolding the Israelites,And the LORD was also angry with me because of you.”  We all do it but it is not acceptable: Adam had a choice and so did Moses. Adam had no right to blame God for his bad choice and Moses had no right to blame the Israelites for the bad choice he made.

God Is Working

SCRIPTURE

But Jesus replied, “My Father is always working, and so am I.”

QUOTE

The word of God hidden in the heart is a stubborn voice to suppress.

COMMENTARY

The devils work is obvious because he leaves a trail of destruction. He is the father of lies which would include gossip and slander. He is a master at the power of suggestion and innuendo. He is the original propagandist. He knows that when a lie is repeated often enough, people began to believe it. His goal is to destroy the fellowship of a church and discourage the members that are actually doing what they are supposed to be doing. The LORD, on the other hand, works is a much different way and sometimes His work is not as obvious. The LORD is patient, extremely patient, whereas the devil is reckless and ruthless because he is running out of time. Sometimes when we are discouraged, we do like the Jews and ask God for a sign [some visible manifestation that He is at work] but God does not work that way. He is patience and He wants us to be patient also. He works like leaven in bread, inconspicuously but He is working and He is transforming whether we see it or not.

The devil is working. He is not lazy and he doesn’t think that he is going to lose so we cannot assume that he is going to throw in the towel any time soon but neither should we assume that God is not working simple because we don’t see anything happening. Jesus said…”My Father is always working and so am I.” Don’t trust me, trust Jesus on the subject…God is working!

Can you get exciting about what God is doing in the lives of others and in our church? The devil is a user and a loser; don’t let him hoodwink you into helping him. Tell the truth; let go of malice and forgive and encourage one another.

EXTRA

  • I imagine one or two have wondered just what I did yesterday that I had never done before: I wore overalls and a white shirt to a funeral and the other preacher had on overalls as well as did all the pallbearers.
  • I was blessed to work with a real Sport yesterday; Richard Sport, pastor of Danville Church of Christ and a fine man. I told him that the Spirit of God was on him. He led the entire congregation is singing AMAZING GRACE. I kid you not. If you don’t believe me ask Michael Penney, Sammy Crow or Gregg Holliday: they were there. I was highly impressed with Bro. Richard.
  • I think we had another good BLOCK PARTY OFFERING but we need you to pray for workers. We have a great line up for the stage this year with Dixie Flavor and our own DBC praise team. Sunday night got me pumped: this bunch is ready for the big stage, amen! We need the Praise and Motion team to do a couple of songs also. We still don’t know about fireworks. It will be here in 18 days. T-Shirts on sale for $12.
You thought I was kidding, didn't you?
