Trials And Temptations

God blesses those who patiently endure testing and temptation. Afterward they will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him.

~James 1:12, NLT

‘We do not enjoy being put to the test by trials or temptation but both are great instructors.”

The Greek word peirasmos can refer to both a trial or temptation. The NASB reads, “Blessed is a man who perseveres under trial,” whereas the AV reads “Blessed is the man that endures temptation.” Who is right and who is wrong? Both are right but we must understand that God may test us but He will not tempt us to sin. God puts us to the test to make us better: Satan tempts us to make us worse. Believers do not live a sheltered life: we must be ready to face both trials and temptations.

eve-gardenGod created us with desires for certain things like food, water, clothing [shelter] and sex. If we never felt hunger, we would starve. If we never felt thirst, we would dehydrate. If we never felt cold, we would freeze in winter. If we never felt the urge to have sex, the human race would cease to exist. Our desires are normal not sinful: they become sinful when we allow them to control us. EXAMPLE: We are to “eat to live,” not “live to eat.” If we eat every time we feel like eating, we will most like become over weight which is not healthy. Sex is like fire or steam: it is good as long as it is controlled but if it gets out of control it becomes highly destructive. By control I mean in the context of marriage, commitment and love.

Eve’s desire was for food, pleasure {delight} and knowledge…When the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was desirable to make one wise, she took from its fruit and ate; and she gave also to her husband with her, and he ate. God knew things that Eve did not know and it was driving her crazy. Have you ever attempted to keep a secret from your wife?

There is nothing inherently sinful about food, pleasure or knowledge but Eve was not willing to wait on God’s timing. What she wanted was good but she went about getting it the wrong way. We always get in trouble when we try to fulfill our desires a part from Christ. We can never satisfy our desires by partaking of things that God has forbidden.

Warren Wiersbe says there are four stages to sin: Desire, Deception, Disobedience and Death. Sometimes it takes years and years for sin to mature but when it does, it brings forth death. I imagine this truth became crystal clear when Adam and Eve stood by the grave of Abel.

But each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust.

~James 1:14

The desire of love is to give. The desire of lust is to take.

Lust not only takes but it takes rashly without thought of consequence and has been known to take by force. Oswald Chambers says,  “Lust means– I must have what I want at once.” It may relate to physical appetite, the desire for pleasure or perhaps power but basically stated, lust says–“I cannot wait for God’s timing, He is indifferent to my needs and I must have this now.” All of Eve’s desires were not bad and God would have fulfilled them in time had she waited.

  • VBS meeting today…less than 3 months to VBS…June 2-6.
  • Out late last night: girls had a softball game in football weather. It is the first time I have had grandkids on both teams. Colby Crow pitched for West Morgan. She did great. I went to hug and encourage her, as I started off, she said, “Thank you Granddaddy.” She has always called me Granddaddy and that makes me proud. My main concern for her was that she not get hurt. She is a 7th grader. It all ended well: we won and she didn’t get hurt. I got home late so you get a short blog.
  • I may have already reported this but we had a great offering Sunday along with the two professions of faith. God is good.

Obedience Or Consequences

February 3, 2014

You desire things and cannot have them…You covet things but cannot acquire them…You ask and fail to get them because you ask with evil selfish motives, to spend them on your own pleasures.

~James 4 {Williams}

Life is hard but it get harder when you do something stupid.

~The Freeman Institute

I was reading James 4 in the Williams translation yesterday and one phrase captured my attention…“You desire things you cannot have.” I suspect that most of desire things we cannot have. As a kid, I wanted to be 6’3″ tall, weight 220, have great athletic ability and play for the Bear. I made the 220 more than once but the height and the athletic ability was not in the cards and Bear never called. In some cases, all the desire in the world is not going to change things but on the other hand, there are situations where we continue to pursue what we desire until we get it; like Eve in the garden. She desired things that she did not need and she pursued them with reckless abandon until she got them but she had to disobey God in the process. What she failed to foresee was the consequences of disobedience. Eve was convinced that getting what she wanted would bring happiness; the opposite occurred. She brought miserable consequences upon herself and her family. We are still suffering from the consequences today. The secret to happiness is to want what Jesus wants for you.

  • God is good. I marvel at His grace. John Newton got it right, it is amazing. Great message last night and a ton of food. I could not get over the amount of food and the quality.
  • The SUPER BOWL wasn’t very super for the Bronco’s. It was never really a game, just a blow out. I watched the 2nd half to see if Tebow would be in the commercials. I was told that he would but I didn’t see one. Generally I hate commercials but almost everyone I saw in the 2nd half were very entertaining. The one with the half Doberman/Chihuahua hybrid was good and my favorite was the Dorito ad with the little girl riding the St. Bernard. I cannot remember in recent history watching a game where the commercials were more entertaining than the game.

The Art Of Deception

And so God has said that you are not to eat fruit from any tree in the park.

Genesis 3:1, Moffatt

You will never put your faith in a God that you do not believe is good.

The devil is more than a liar, he is a very cunning and clever liar. He is so good at deception that he can make a lie sound like the truth. Often times he begins with the power of suggestion. Has God forbidden that you eat the fruit? Why would God withhold from you? Is He hiding something from you? The devil undermined Eve’s faith in the goodness of God, once he had destroyed her faith, the rest was easy.

  • I sat in the parking lot at Walmart for an hour yesterday, waiting for the rain to let up so I could get the TV. So, considering the deluge that we got, I think the BP was a big success. My greatest concern was emptying out the FORTE. Can you imagine what we would have done with all that stuff. Thank You Jesus. BP’s are like VBS, I love them but I don’t want to do more than one a year.
  • My apology to Gregg and Tracey they sponsored the Big Screen TV and like a dummy, I forgot to mention it. All of you need to go get a tank of gas from Gregg to show him our appreciation. It was a blunder on my part. Thank God, Gregg and Tracey are forgiving people.
  • My day yesterday started at 5:00 and ended at close to midnight so it you get a short or lousy sermon today…don’t act shocked. If its going to be lousy, make it short, right.
  • Peggy and the kids will make arrangement tomorrow; we will keep you posted.

QUOTE: The Christian life becomes difficult when we seek God’s blessing while doing our own will. ~Andrew Murray

COMMENTARY: Eve saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate; and she also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate. [Genesis 3:6, NRSV] Temptation begins with desire. We see something that we want and right or wrong we take it if it is made available. Of course, real temptation involves two basic things: [1] Opportunity and  [2] Ability. A eunuch is never tempted to run off with another man’s wife: that’s why the ancients kings worked them in harems. They had no ability to be tempted. Eve had both the opportunity and the ability. She desired the fruit to the extent that her desire [lust] was in control of her life. We must learn to distinguish between the will and desire. The only path to victory is to know the truth and will to walk in it. What was the truth in Eve’s situation: God said, “You may freely eat of every tree of the garden; but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall die.” This is not an ambiguous command: it is very clear. Eve knew the truth but allowed her desire [which is not always a bad thing] to override her will and it got her and the human race in deep trouble. Knowing and processing the truth of God’s word is paramount when it comes to overcoming temptation. If you do not saturate your mind with the word of God, you will not be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. Knowing the truth in any given situation is the key and then of course, we have to do what we know is the right thing. Note verse 8:31… “You are truly my disciples if you remain faithful to my teachings. Victory comes in knowing the truth and doing it. Perhaps you are like me in thinking, “Why did God make the forbidden fruit so desirable?”  I’ll be a monkey’s uncle if I know but I have an idea…when you resist temptation and you follow God’s instruction although it is not what you want at the time, it forges character. It may not be the only way, but I’m sure it is the best way for God to grow us into the character He wants us to be.
