“Awake, O sleeper, rise up from the dead, and Christ will give you light.”

Ephesians 5:14, NLT

Quote

Indifference is the strongest force in the universe. It makes everything it touches meaningless. Indifference is more difficult to conquer than hate and hostility.

Sleep is often used in the bible as a symbol for spiritual laziness, apathy and lethargy. Jonah would have slept through a tempest had not he been awakened by the ships captain. Matthew Henry said of Jonah, “The devil had rocked him to sleep in carnal security.” The disciples slept on the Mount of transfiguration and again in Gethsemane.

How could Jonah sleep through a tempest? How could the disciples sleep while Jesus was in deepest agony? How do we sleep while America continues to kill babies by the millions? We sleep through the storm because we are indifferent; spiritually, we are lethargic. Comfort is more important to us than morality.

What would it take to wake a sleeping church? A voice perhaps. My father use to wake us up with Isaiah 60:1, “Rise and Shine.” He also jerked the covers off and grabbed your big toe. Deprivation can awaken us. I go to bed hungry in order to control my weight but get up around 1:00 am for a Klondike bar, then about 3:00 for a cheese and cracker or some pickled okra. Deep hunger can awaken us. How bad do you want a REVIVAL? Catastrophic events like earth quakes and tornadoes can wake us up. The destruction of the World Trade Center was a wake up call but we rolled over, hit the snooze button and went back to sleep.

You may have heard the story about the mom waking her son on Sunday morning:

Mom: “Son you need to get up.”

Son: “Why?”

Mom: “Because you need to be at Church.”

Son: “Why do I need to be at church?”

Mom: “Because you are the pastor.”

  • We received word that Carmen Livingston passed away yesterday evening. I was on the road and did not get in until 9:30 last night. June told me to look at my phone and the message was there. I visited Carmen last Sunday evening. He said he was tired of living and was ready to go but I did not expect his departure to be so soon.
  • This has been the busiest week of my life and I am exhausted. The reason there was no Blog yesterday was that I was exhausted when I got home on Monday night. I had to sit on the front pew last night and rest a few moments before driving home. My nephew offered to drive me but I couldn’t let him do that.  Bro. Tim called and talked me home. They had one Profession of Faith last night in a JBS. This has God written all over it!
  • I think several people have forgotten that I will not be a DBC tonight, I will be finishing up at Sardis Springs. Shohn needs a van driver and it cannot be me. Joe David has his plate full and it doesn’t need to be him. If you can help, call Shohn.

SCRIPTURE

“But Israel soon became fat and unruly; the people grew heavy, plump, and stuffed! Then they abandoned the God who had made them; they made light of the Rock of their salvation.

~Deuteronomy 32:15, NLT

QUOTE

Could a mariner sit idle if he heard the drowning cry? Could a doctor sit in comfort and just let his patients die? Could a fireman sit idle, let men burn and give no hand? Can you sit at ease in Zion with the world around you damned?

~Leonard Ravenhill

Change one word in Deuteronomy 32:15 and it is as current as today’s news paper–“But America soon became fat and unrulythe people grew heavy, plump, and stuffed! Then they abandoned the God who had made themthey made light of the Rock [Jesus] of their salvation. Someone other than Moses wrote Deuteronomy 34 because verse 8 reads, There has never been another prophet in Israel like Moses, whom the Lord knew face to face. One thing is certain, he had the Israelites pegged and it seems that Americans have a lot in common with the ancient Israelites. This nation was born in adversity and suffered through more wars than you can count on one hand but we can not handle prosperity. We have abandoned the God who made us the greatest nation in history and we have treated His Son, the ROCK with great disrespect.

  • There was a wreck yesterday morning [10/15/15] on Danville Road across from John and Cyndi’s. It involved Marlon Cole and Morgan Weatherwax. I was told that both escaped serious injury but I think Marlon went on the Huntsville to check out his back. It was a bad wreck and it is a miracle that no one was killed. LORD willing, I will check on Marlon today.
  • Bill Wilborn remains in very serious condition. Bill has a staph infection and he needs a surgery but he is too weak. They are going to try to build him up so they can amputate the bad foot. His heart rate is also very high: Debbie has requested that you pray. I was there early yesterday but he got worse as the day progressed.
  • Kane Update: Well….that is a deep subject. We will not be home this weekend. Plans have changed. Kane’s Colon is nor well enough to be that far away. I do respect Dr. Poi he has Kane’s health in mind. It is hard on us here and family home. Pray that when sonogram time comes Monday all is well.
  • Corey Orr [Chanda’s GM] is growing weaker. She was not able to converse with me yesterday. She is getting good care from her daughters.

SCRIPTURE

But You, O Lord, are a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abundant in lovingkindness and truth.
~Psalms 86:15, NASB

QUOTE

“It seems to me it’s always the evil we refuse to see that does us the greatest harm.”
~Robert Baer
my thoughts red
I wish I had a glowing upbeat report to share with you about the Marriage Rally but that would be wishful thinking. Not only did I not see one soul from Morgan County [other than those with me], I saw no one from the Alabama Baptist State Convention. We may have had 250 people. Some were saying 500 but they were being optimistic. There are supposedly one million evangelical Christians in Alabama: where were they yesterday?
We have lost our States Rights: Mr. Lincoln took care of the sovereignty of the States. We are no longer the Unites States of America, we are the socially cloned States of America. We have lost our right to privacy and ownership of property: we have Mr. Roosevelt to thank. The IRS has no right to know your income and no right to seize your property yet they can do both. Please show me where the Federal Government has this right in the constitution. They have control of higher education, the curriculum for all public education and they control the courts. If that were not enough, they have the full support of the media. They demonize folks like Roy Moore and glorify freaks like Bruce Jenner.
The truth is: the cultural war is directed towards Christians, not religion. We have a lot of Baptist that have religion but they have no relationship with Christ. They are admiring fans but not adoring followers. These religious Baptist are not personally offended by gay marriage or the liberal agenda as a whole. There is no moral outrage: it doesn’t exist. The truth is: most folks will not read pass the third line of this blog: “It’s not your war, right?” You are correct: this evil only attacks and antagonizes the true followers of Christ.
On the bright side: my sources tell me the weddings went great. We had horrific traffic going down and Jerry said, “What if all these people are going to the rally?” They were going to the beach or some where South of Montgomery but my group had a ball. Felton doesn’t meet a stranger. Thanks to Felton, Jerry and Keith the trip was delightful in spite of the traffic. Plus our guys got a kick out of doing an act of kindness at lunch. It was a good moment: perhaps I can share it someday but the LORD says, “Not today.” Thank You Jesus for your mercy and grace.

Have a great day!

MESSAGE

Costa Concordia

Costa Concordia

On April 15, 1912, the RMS Titanic sank in the North Atlantic and over 1,500 people perished in the icy waters. The ship had been dubbed the unsinkable. Almost 100 years later, January 13, 2012, the Costa Concordia crashed into a reef off the cost of Italy, 32 precious souls lost their lives. The freakish thing was the ship was very close to the shore and it capsized but never sank completely. The Captain was fooling around with a female guest on the bridge when it happened. To make matters worse, he abandoned the ship without giving aid to any of his passengers. The purser did stay and fulfill the obligations of the captain but most of the crew acted with the same selfishness as did the captain.  Passengers were shocked at the crews indifference. When they ask for help or directions, the crew ignored them as they were headed for the life boats themselves. They knew the way but they were not sharing it with others. This could very well be a picture of the modern church; we know the way but due to our selfishness and indifference, we are not sharing it.

7598_The%20Reason%20for%20My%20Hope_smallThe story above came from Dr. Graham’s new book, THE REASON FOR MY HOPE. If the entire book is anything like chapter one, it is going to be a great read. TRUNK-A-TREAT went great! We had almost 30 venders: PTL! I don’t know what it is, but every time we go inside we have a record crowd. I was afraid we would run out of candy but we had plenty. I didn’t take any pictures but I think Holly will post hers on Facebook. A special thanks to our Senior Adults who helped. Granny T. helped us this year. She said Curly bragged on our stew. I said, “It wasn’t that good Granny.” She said, “If Curly says it is good, it is good.” What a great way to close out the month….Stew, Trunk-A-Treat and a good rain. Thank YOU Jesus for the rain. Now we turn our attention to REVIVAL which begins this Sunday morning. Pray, pray and pray some more. We meet with the Matthews this Sunday morning at 8:15 for our last prayer meeting before MY HOPE.

SCRIPTUREWhen the people of the land come before the Lord at the appointed festivals, whoever enters by the north gate to worship shall go out by the south gate; and whoever enters by the south gate shall go out by the north gate: they shall not return by way of the gate by which they entered, but shall go out straight ahead. {Ezekiel 46:9, NRSV}

QUOTE: We are dealing with ‘Divine Electricity’: people ought to get a charge or a shock. I had rather a person go out mad than to just go out. ~Vance Havner

“Who Cares?”

COMMENTARY: In Ezekiel’s vision of the new temple and worship, the Israelites were not allowed to go out of the same gate by which they entered to worship. If they entered by the South, they had to exit by the North. In other words, they could not go out the same way they came in. A college professor became so discouraged with the indifference of his class that he stopped his lecture, took the chalk and in big letters he wrote on the board…A-P-A-T-H-Y! He then threw the chalk against the wall and walked out slamming the door behind him. The class sat in shock. Then one old boy said, “What is APATHY?” One of his class mates said without hesitation, “Who cares” and then one by one they got up and left. They went out the same way they came in–indifferent and apathetic. Just as a spiritual exercise this Sunday, would you be willing to go out a different door than the one you entered? Just how bad do you hunger for change [spiritual transformation]?

EXTRA: Kathy Garner is in Huntsville Hospital. Arteriagram today [May 8th]. I’ve heard one great story about Small Groups but I want to hear more. You will get an opt to share this Sunday.

The Good Samaritan

November 25, 2011

SCRIPTURE: You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your being, with all your strength, and with all your mind, and love your neighbor as yourself.”  [Luke 10:27, CEB}

QUOTE: The test of any civilization is the way that it cares for its helpless members. —Pearl S. Buck

THOUGHT: To the world, you may be just one person but to one person, you may be the world…the Good Samaritan is a good example.

COMMENTARY: I like to think of myself as the “Good Samaritan” but actually I see myself in all the characters, even the victim in the ditch. Perhaps you are thinking, “I could never identify with the robbers. Have you ever taken the glory that belongs to God or withheld your tithes and offerings? Certainly no one can deny being the indifferent Priest or Levite who passed a hurting person and didn’t stop to help. Have you ever imagined yourself being the man in the ditch? The bumps and bruises of living in a sin-cursed and fallen world can get us down. None of us are invincible. I have seen grown men cry like babies. The prince of this world has a lot of clubs to beat us down: divorce, death, disease, disappointment, dishonor and a host of other things can leave us feeling helpless and hopeless. I do believe that the man in the ditch was semi-conscious. I believe he could open his eyes but he was too weak to move and unable to help himself. Hey, folks, we can get that weak, too weak to help ourselves. What did this hurting man learn while laying in his own blood beside the road? He learned that those he thought would help did not and the last person on earth that he thought would help, did help. Which character would you like to be today? To be the good Samaritan we have to be sensitive to the pain of others and willing to help, even if it cost us a few bucks or makes us late for work.

EXTRA: Could you ask for a more beautiful day than we had yesterday? I hope you had a great Thanksgiving. I sure enjoyed the TG service at church yesterday. Most of the people who share testimonies had never shared before–it was good. It has become my favorite service of the year. When Tim Tebow scores a TD, he goes to the side line and bows on one knee giving thanks. Young people all over the world are imitating him and of course we have some folks, the unbelievers and the halo-wearing Pharisees that say its sacrilegious and  that people are worshipping Tim but I don’t think this is the case. I think he is a good kid but we do need to pray for him as Ken suggested because the eyes of the world are upon him. It is an awful lot of pressure for a young man. There are some praying for me to fail but there are thousands that pray for him to fail. Let us pray that he doesn’t.
