The Essence of Sin

May 20, 2016

All of us like sheep have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; But the LORD has caused the iniquity of us all to fall on Him.

~Isaiah 53:6, NASB

Selfishness is the greatest curse on the human race.

~William Gladstone

We generally think of sin as transgression or breaking the law but the essence of sin is far simpler. The fall left mankind self-centered. We are egocentric instead of theocentric. Our default sitting is on self-interest, self-exaltation and self-preservation. Merriam Webster’s definition of selfishness is interesting: a selfish person is concerned excessively or exclusively with oneself :  seeking or concentrating on one’s own advantage, pleasure, or well-being without regard for others. This makes it all but impossible for us to put either God or others first. It is this selfish desire, to have our own way, that produces rebellion.

James said, “Why do you fight and argue with each other? Isn’t it because you are driven by your selfish desires?” [GNT/JEV] Our selfish nature produces divorce, war, law suits and oppression of every sort. Paul said in 2 Corinthians 5:17, “Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.” In 2 Corinthians 5:15, Paul said,Christ died for all so that we should no longer live to please ourselves but Christ who died for us.”

Paul said to the Philippians, Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too. This world is hopelessly flawed, men are cursed with a selfish nature. Only Jesus Christ can change this condition. We talk about the power of evil because it is powerful but it is not all powerful: Jesus is coming back as the LION of Judah and He will crush all rebellion like an 18 wheeler running over an egg.
