Grace, Grace, God’s Grace

March 4, 2016

“We believe that we are all saved the same way, by the undeserved grace of the Lord Jesus.”

~Matthew 5:11, NLT

In the realm of grace, the word ‘deserve’ has no place.

~Philip Yancey

In Matthew 20 Jesus told a story about a landowner who had a vineyard. He went to the market place at 6:00 am to hire workers and he agreed to pay the normal daily wage and sent them out to work. He did the same thing at 9:00 am, 12:00 noon, 3:00 pm and then again at 5:00 pm. All the workers assumed he would pay them according to what they deserved with those working 12 hours getting eleven times more than those who worked for one hour but the land owner threw them a curve, he gave them all a days wage. Those who had worked one hour were thrilled, those that worked twelve were indignant and so they complained.

The Land Owner’s response is classic: “I have not been unfair. You agreed to work for a days wage and you got a days wage. As for the others, it is my money and there is nothing illegal about me showing extra kindness by paying some more than they deserve.

This story is not about running a farm nor a business; it is about God’s Kingdom and it is governed by grace. You can throw your records away and you calculators. God dispenses gifts not wages. Everything is grace, amazing unbelievable grace.
