Detecting False Prophets

September 17, 2015

Serve only the Lord your God and fear Him alone. Obey His commands, listen to his voice, and cling to Him.

Deuteronomy 13:4, NLT

The greatest mistake a congregation can make is to assume that what the preacher is saying is biblically sound.

In Deuteronomy 13 Moses warns the Israelites about the danger of being lead astray by false prophets. Moses gives them four indicators that will help them identify a false prophet:

  1. FALSE PROPHETS INVARIABLY WORSHIP THEMSELVES. False prophets usually have a narcissistic personality disorder like a Jim Jones. Dr. Sam Vaknin is an Israeli psychologist and the world’s leading expert on narcissism. Vaknin says that  Barrack Obama’s is a typical narcissist, his language, posture and demeanor, and the testimonies of his closest, dearest friends suggest that the man is either a narcissist or he may have narcissistic personality disorder (NPD). Narcissists project a grandiose but false image of themselves. David Koresh, Charles Manson, Joseph Koni, Shoko Asahara, Stalin, Saddam, Mao, Kim Jong Ill and Adolph Hitler are a few examples of narcissists of our time. All these men had a tremendous influence over their fanciers. They created a personality cult around themselves and with their blazing speeches elevated their admirers, filled their hearts with enthusiasm and instilled in their minds a new zest for life. They gave them hope! They promised them the moon, but in the end, brought them to their doom.
  2. FALSE PROPHETS ALWAYS OVER EMPHASIZE THE SUBJECTIVE. They are into dreams, visions and personal experiences. They even exalt personal experience over the word of God. They repeatedly use phrases like…God told me, God showed me, etc.
  3. FALSE PROPHETS PROMOTE REBELLION. They encourage rebellion because they want to become the spiritual leader and for them to become the sole leader, they have to destroy the followers confidence in previous leaders.
  4. FALSE PROPHETS LEAD YOU TO THEMSELVES BUT AWAY FROM THE LORD. They use flattery and smooth speech to seduce followers. They tickle ears. They have the gift of saying what people want to hear. All false prophets prey upon weak-minded followers.

  • The LORD is to be praised for His goodness. I don’t want to overstate anything but I think Gary is slightly better and so is Kane as last report so PRAISE JESUS.
  • John Wydner had to be taken to DGH ER yesterday morning and they kept him over night: more test and x-rays today. John has a gastrological problem.
  • We finished up the REVIVAL last night: had another good service. June and I enjoyed sweet fellowship with the fine folks at Bellview: we appreciate Alan and Debbie inviting us. Tom and Edith came two nights, Charles Sanford came two nights and Charles and Dian came one night. The LORD was kind and merciful to let us be a part of the meeting. We do need REVIVAL in America.
