“Martha, Martha, you are worried and bothered about so many things;  but only one thing is necessary, for Mary has chosen the good part, which shall not be taken away from her.”

~Luke 10:41-42, NLT

“Much of our activity today is little more than a cheap anesthetic to deaden the pain of an empty life.”

~Lewis Sperry Chafer

If we are to have intimacy with Christ; if we are to worship and adore Him, we must follow Mary’s example and focus totally on Jesus. A cluttered mind is an enemy to intimacy and worship. Charles Swindoll in his book EIGHT ESSENTIALS TO BECOMING LIKE CHRIST, gives us a list of things that lead to mind clutter.

  1. Our inability to say no! We are spread too thin; involved in too many things.
  2. We don’t plan time for leisure. Work-aholics are generally flustered, short-tempered, on edge and hassled. It happens when we try to do too much. Anxiety is always the results of assuming responsibility that has not been assigned to you.
  3. We don’t take the time to celebrate our victories. As soon as we have completed one project, we plunge into another.
  4. We try to keep up with the Jones’. We get caught up in the rat race and spend more than we make. Financial bondage creates a lot of anxiety.
  5. We have fallen for the myth that modern technology has simplified our lives. Technology is a wonderful thing. I use my cell phone all the time. It is a phone, a camera, a video recorder, alarm clock, road map, calculator, computer, flashlight, calendar and more. Thanks to modern technology we can do things much faster and yet we seem to have less time. Our great need is to simplify and get down to the basics.
