SCRIPTURE

Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good; Blessed is the man who trusts in Him!

~Psalms 34:8, NKJV

QUOTE

Yet, in the maddening maze of things, And tossed by storm and flood, To one fixed trust my spirit clings; I know that God is good!

~John Greenleaf Whittier

I don’t do many human interest stories but I found this one intriguing.  Andrzej Debowski spent most of his first 13 years in a Polish orphanage. He was one of seven children who were taken from their biological parents because both parents were drug addicts. Andrzej hated the orphanage and ran away every time he got a chance. It was usually a couple of days before the police picked him up but for him, sleeping on the street was an upgrade to the orphanage. The food and living conditions at the orphanage were deplorable. At age 13, a family from America came to the orphanage in hopes of adopting Andrzej. Long story short, he became one of the rare Polish kids to be adopted by an American Family.

The Adoptive parents were Tom and Michelle Griffith of Calhoun, Georgia. Tom and Michelle had no children and both were math teachers. Tom played football at Furman and Michelle was an athlete at Berry College. Andrzej was skeptical about the move: he could not speak a word of English and he had no taste for American food. Within a year he was speaking English. By his third year, he was kicking for the Junior High football team and shortly after the varsity. The first time he kicked a football, it was from 32 yards away and went straight through the uprights. The teacher who took him to the field to try out was astounded. By his senior year in high school, he was kicking the ball throw the end zone. By now you have probably figured out that Andrzej changed his name to Adam Griffith.

Nick Saban says that Adam in hard wired. His upbringing has conditioned him to be the ultimate kicker. He learned to survive in Poland on his own. He doesn’t let a bad kick get in his head. He is mentally tough.

He had a couple of bad ones Saturday but reading his story in the Tuscaloosa News puts things in perspective. He is an excellent student and plans to get his masters. He will graduate early and his major is Criminal Justice. He thought all Americans were rich but found out otherwise. His adoptive parents live on a 60 acre farm and teach school for a living. If Adam makes it to the professional ranks, he may be able to help his siblings but one way or the other he intends to go back to Poland: “Just for a visit” he says, America is now his home.
