The Heart Of Prayer

SCRIPTURE

“The world is full of so-called prayer warriors who are prayer-ignorant. They’re full of formulas and programs and advice, peddling techniques for getting what you want from God. Don’t fall for that nonsense. This is your Father you are dealing with, and he knows better than you what you need. With a God like this loving you, you can pray very simply.”

~Matthew 6:7-8, Msg

QUOTE

Confession and penitence are the threshold to prayer, adoration its sanctuary, the enjoyment of God its bread and wine.

~C.S. Lewis

COMMENTARY

The first object of prayer is not petition. Jesus said, “Your Father knows the things you have need of before you ask Him.” The object of prayer is not to inform God concerning our need; our first objective is the Father Himself. We are to love Him, praise Him and be honest and open before HIM. He is the heart and soul of prayer. He created prayer. A part from Him, there is no prayer.

Drop down into the chair of quietness,
Let all the striving cease.
Take from your soul the strain and stress,
Enjoy the beauty of His peace.

The most convicting quote I’ve read this year is by Francis Fenelon, “How rare it is to find a soul quiet enough to hear God speak.”  Unfortunately the thoughts above comes from my reading, not my experience.
