New Wine

January 19, 2014

No one puts new wine into old wineskins; otherwise the wine will burst the skins, and the wine is lost and the skins as well; but one puts new wine into fresh wineskins.”

~ Mark 2:22, NASB

All changes, even the most longed for, have their melancholy; for what we leave behind us is a part of ourselves; we must die to one life before we can enter another.

~Anatole France

In the early 1900’s when the railroad industry was booming, one of the companies bought a new locomotive. It was faster and more efficient than the old model but to get the maximum performance it had to be operated according to specs and the old engineer refused to study the new manual. He was so angry about the change, which no one sought his opinion on, that he operated the new engine the same way he had the old and ran it at the same speed. He not only refused to change, he complained incessantly about the new locomotive. He insisted the company put the old one back on the tracks. The company removed the old engineer and left the new locomotive on the track.

Jesus said, “You don’t put new wine in old skins”. You do not stifle creativity. God is the ultimate creator. He does not duplicate. Seven billion humans on planet earth and all are different. Billions upon billions of stars and all are different and the same is true with snow flakes. God created you to be creative. He did not create you to fit into a mold. When we stifle creativity, we dampen enthusiasm and we lose the very thing we are trying to accomplish. We worship Jesus who creates new mercies every single day, we do not worship the past.

I attended a conference 30 years ago and heard one of the guru’s from Nashville say, “Your church is going to get a new pastor every 7-10 years, it can be you, if you are willing to change, or if can be someone else.” Paul Bear Bryant did something that Woody Hayes and Frank Kush couldn’t do; it adapted to the changing times and that is how he survived. Jesus never changes, He doesn’t need to, He is perfect but He wants you and I to change. If you don’t believe me, ask HIM.

  • On this day last year we had sunshine and 60 degrees.
  • Got an email yesterday from my friend Bobby. When I read the caption, it got my blood boiling….Texas A & M has ranked Obama 5th best out of 44 American presidents. Hang on, wait to you see the breakdown. Ronald Reagan and George Washington tie for 1st, 39 others tie for 2nd, Slick Willy finished 3rd, Carter 4th and Obama 5th. Go Aggies! Don’t you know Carter loves Obama. There is only one place in Atlanta where there is no traffic, Carters Presidential Museum.
  • Full schedule today: Deacons-8:00, LCBS-9:00, Celebrate Jesus in worship at 10:15 and 6:00.
  • Sealed the deal Friday night on the phone: LORD willing, we will have homemade rolls for our SAFE meeting on January 31. Plus that delicious Mississippi pot roast: best in the world.
  • Congratulations to Susan Hensley, the big winner in the “Throw Back” contest. She identified the girls in the pic and wins a free copy of my book. The only problem is that it is not published. It’s all in my mind, not a very big book!
