my hope Christmas

SCRIPTURE

Until the time came to fulfill his dreams, the Lord tested Joseph’s character.

~Psalm 105:19, NLT

QUOTE

Dreaming of heaven or heavenly things is no sin though we may be accused of escapism. Those who fix all their affections of the things of this world are the real escapists.

~Yaakov

STORY

What about the name Israel Isidore Baline; does it ring a bell? Israel was a Jew born in Mohilev, Russia, May 11, 1888 but his folks migrated to New York City in the early 1900’s. Israel was a gifted composer and at age 23 he found himself in the spotlight when his first composition, Alexander’s Ragtime Band became a smashing hit. He went on to write There Is No Business Like Show Business, and God Bless America. He composed his greatest hit in 1941, I’m Dreaming of A White Christmas. A tad ironic wouldn’t you say since Israel who changed his name to Irving Berlin was a Belarusian-Jew and did not celebrate Christmas. Berlin was a genius and he understood that what made Christmas so special to Americans was that it gave a brief reprieve from the harsh realities of a struggling economy and a world at war. We all know how a blanket of fresh snow makes the world look clean and bright. Everyone in America dreams of a white Christmas, even those who live in L.A. where Berlin wrote the song.

Now for the icing on the cake: Berlin was on the verge of tearing up the composition and throwing in the trash but Bing Crosby stopped him. Crosby would be singing the tune in Holiday Inn which is now a movie classic and he took the sheet music from Berlin and began singing it just as it was written. Crosby would not give it back and he refused to make any changes. This song that Berlin despised became the most popular Christmas song in America. Now you know the rest of the story.

EXTRA

These new glasses that I am to wear all the time are driving me nuts. Let’s take a poll: how many days do you think I will keep them before losing them or running over them with the truck or lawn mower or something? Charter is down in Rocky Ford today so I am coming to you from McDonalds in Hartselle. Sorry about being late.
