The Angel and A Sword

August 16, 2011

SCRIPTURE: The Assyrian shall fall by a sword, not of mortals, and a sword, not of humans, shall devour him. {Isaiah 31:8, NRSV} Then the Angel of the LORD set our and struck down one hundred eighty-five thousand in the camp of the Assyrians; when morning dawned, they were all dead bodies. {Isaiah 37:36, NRSV}

QUOTE:  I am sure that never was a people, who had more reason to acknowledge a Divine interposition in their affairs, than those of the United States; and I should be pained to believe that they have forgotten that agency, which was so often manifested during our Revolution, or that they failed to consider the omnipotence of that God who is alone able to protect them.”

THOUGHT: God can either protect us or allow harm to come our way: either way, we depend totally on Him.

COMMENTARY: The Assyrian army had Jerusalem surrounded and Sennacherib was making some bold threats. In the course of these events, Sennacherib sets him self up as being greater than Israel’s God. Isaiah told Hezekiah not to lose any sleep.  Isaiah said {CEV, Isaiah 31:2] “The LORD is not stupid! He does what He promises and he has the ability to bring doom, disaster or catastrophe.” Sennacherib picked a fight with the wrong God. Israel’s God made heaven and earth and He is in control of all the elements. He has an array of assorted disasters He can send at any time. The Lord stopped an entire arm with one Angel and one sword. Hey, folks, it was not much of a fight. The Assyrians went down in the first round: the angel of the Lord never worked up a sweet. I am not saying that God is as powerful as a tornado; I am saying He is infinitely more powerful than a thousand tornadoes or any other natural disaster. If he were of a mind to, he could wipe us all out with something as harmless and gentle as rain. He already did that once. You don’t mess with God folks, it is a fight that you cannot possibly win. Sennacherib was a fool and Isaiah was right, “God is not stupid and He can play the disaster card anytime He chooses.” No army, no nation and certainly no tin-pan dictator is a match for our God.

EXTRA: Holly the daughter took the Block Party pictures and you can see them all on FACEBOOK. I could show you a few at a time but it would take forever. I do have some that she does not have: below is Mylee getting ready to go to her first day of kindergarten. That leaves us only three that are not in public school but they will be going to pre-school very soon. Josie and Ty will attend DBC pre-school and Ryder will be going to Hartselle. Seth is a Senior this year. Hard to believe! They have a football game Friday night against Brewer [pre-season]. Regular Season begins on the 26th.

Mylee Reese standing by Big L. It was her first day of school.
